Assam Laksa & Sotong Kangkung @ Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur

Amid the busy tourist stalls of Petaling Street, you'll discover these two stalls which have been trading for more than 30 years in front of the Madras Lane market selling Assam Laksa, Curry Laksa and Sotong Kangkung. Tables and chairs are laid at the entrance of the wet market and the side walkway of the shop next to the market. Only available from the evening onwards, this is a popular stop over for people who work around the area before they head home.

What's good is their Sotong Kangkung (RM4) - blanched brown calamari and cooked spinach drenched in a black sauce with hints of sugar, prawn paste and sprinkled with ground peanuts. Not a very attractive picture but the taste is good stuff.

Thumbs up for the Assam Laksa (RM3.50 for small and RM3.80 for a big portion) here as it has the right balance of sweet, sour and spicyness I look for. They're also quite generous with the fish. Definitely a place I'll come back again and again. The soup has the kick for me hence I end up slurping it up. You can add as much prawn paste you like from the container on the table to balance out the flavours till you're happy.

Assam laksa looks so yummy!! Too bad it's not open at lunchtime tho. I hardly go there after work. I suppose it's better than the one sold in Madras Lane (open at lunchtime)?

I was there too on Friday night, was looking for Siu Yuk. Saw the Sotong Kangkung Stall and didn't dare try it. Hahaha, I guess I owe that stall a visit now.. :D

instead I ended up at Kim Lian Kee CoffeeShop at the Junction.

Woh.. so sinful and nice! (most nice food is sinful anyway)..

Btw, since you are a foodie, want to check with you if you know where I can get cupcake liner/holder like the one they use in Delic (the one which you can bake on its own w/out needing the cupcake tray)?

I thought of baking for Zara's birthday as party gifts, but can't find that liner in my local baking supply shop.

If you know do drop me a comment or email me yeah? zarasmama@gmail.com

Sorry Cat Cat! Never mind you can dream of assam laksa and have loads of it when u return home.

adrian - their balance of flavours is very good here. Thxs for the tip on the chicken wings. I presume these are evening and night stalls?

lyrical lemongrass - I've only eaten Laksa at the market stalls but this one is really good. Can come one evening if you want.

bernsy - didn't know they sell Siu Yoke at night. How was Hokkien Mee at Kim Lian Kee?

ling239 - I'm drooling over the yummy lemon meringue tart u had!

chenboon - go and try and see if the same?

zara's mum - You can get those at Chang Tung at Taman Megah and Suanson at Jalan Haji Taib 5, Chow Kit. Chang Tung is the same row as Bake with Yen and La Manila in Taman Megah. Hope that helps.

xiu long bao - timing his sotong kangkong being cooked? I just snapped the pix quickly when I went off. No posing there.

meiyen - those are the morning stalls and inside the market area. These ones are the evening ones and in front of the mkt entrance.

The fact is the food is very well known and tasty to everyone. Even you pass by there. You also will feel hungry and have the food at there.

But the worst problem is they are too dirty and they did not take care of the environment. Do you their stall is located at the entry of the wet market which sell chicken in the morninig. They start to have business at afternoon. When you go there for dining, you will feel uncomfortable of the place. You are sitting beside the chicken cage. Some more the chicken is still alive and you can heard the sound from the chicken. Somemore you can see so many rat is passing by the place from up and down. The roof is so old that may collapse on day later or may be you can see a lot of lizard shit all around. cockroach also is the main problem. I don't want to continue to condemn about the environment. In fact most of the people also know that.

Since my last visit, I found out something that they did not use new straw for the drinks. You can feel that the straw is oily. Oh Mad, What the heck, straw is such a cheap thing. Why can't they use the new straw. Unreasonable.................

I am not to condemn there. I just hope they can think a way to improve their business to let more people to enjoy the food. Environment is a very important factor for food. If I let you to have abalone, shark fin and all kind of delicious and luxury food but you are force to eat in a toilet or in a jail. How is your feeling.
