Wantan Mee @ Jalan Brunei Utara, Pudu, KL

As I am totally unfamiliar with Pudu, I was not sure what to have for lunch when I was around the area. Following my instincts, I found this Wantan Mee stall at the corner of a walkway which looked like it was doing brisk business. Since it looked good, I decided to give it a try. I ordered wantan mee with soup instead as everyone around me was going for the soupy version. Also added two Siu Kaw (large dumplings) and two fried wantan after observing my neighbours slurping down theirs. Each standard order comes with two wantans and a shredded chicken and minced meat topping.

I liked the wantan mee which was a lovely texture but I thought the wantans were only okay. What blew me away was their siu kaw - full of minced meat, water chesnut, crunchy black fungus and prawns for RM0.70 each. Very yummy and definitely a new favourite for me.

The ladies that run this extremely compact stall work at the walkway of the road while tables and chairs are placed around. There's also another area i.e. a shoplot slightly away from the stall that is located at the corner of the road. You find a place to sit and one of them will take your order. They also serve a refreshing cincau (grass jelly) drink.

If you have any other food recommendations for the Pudu area, do drop me a comment as I would love to explore more places. I tried to get egg tarts from the nearby Tong Kee Confectionery but sadly they had sold out.

Tong Kee has a branch at Sri Petaling. An intermediate shoplot opposite Sri Petaling Hotel.

Have you tried Hong La Qiao? It's a Northern Chinese restaurant, very good a la carte menu and steam boat.

One of our favourite Chinese restaurant, and we would travel all the way from Shah Alam occasionally to indulge in this.

Restaurant May King serves one of the best Lam Mee & Kari Mee around! Its on the way to the Pudu market. At the roundabout, take the exit opposite the Pudu Police Station and you should see it on your left about 150metres down. Must try include the fried fuchuk kin and also meatballs.
Always packed so do head there before 1pm to avoid dissapointment of finished fuchuk kins.

Hmmm......The best eat in Pudu will not be complete without the yong tau foo behind the row of shops opposite Shaw Parade. Sorry, I cant remember the name of the street as I have been in the US for a long while. If you like fish head, go to Lebuh Pudu (the main street) towards the ex-Pudu Jail direction, and there is a fish head place at a really rundown old colonial looking shoplot. Dont go to the new restaurants as they are just imitators. They do not offer curry fish head, that's your hint to know if you found the real mccoy. The fish head is drowned in a thick soy gravy with bits of garlic and peppers in it. Dont forget to get some tasty fried snack from a roadside stall in front of the bus stand. They have some of the best melt in your mouth (literally) fried bananas. At the spot next to it, you will be able to find a stall selling Nyonya Kuih, which opens after 930pm/ Dive into their peanut kuih (fah sang koh). They are awesome. All other kuih are equally good. Special mention of the mung bean filled ang koo and onde-onde. My dad's favourite is their tiny pack lor mai fan and rempah udang.

Wow! That is the most superb authentic wan tan mee that i ever tried before. But according to one old uncle that share table with me that day, that is the original Pudu Wan Tan Mee that been in business for at least 2nd generations.

Taste magnificent and the soup is the best unlike ordinary Wan Tan Mee or the imitator just opposite their stall namely 168 Wan Tan Mee. Look for the real one...
