Korea BBQ Chicken @ Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur

Recently, Desa Sri Hartamas seems to slowly turning into a Korean cuisine hub. The latest from Korea is this franchise of Korea's No. 1 chicken restaurant,
BBQ Chicken. The name BBQ chicken is extremely confusing as one's brain immediately tunes it to stand for barbeque chicken. However for this particular restaurant, it actually means Best Believable Quality chicken. They have franchises all over the world so don't be surprised if you come across it in say Spain or even the USA.

Charbroiled Chicken

Unlike other places, their promise to the customer is a healthier meal as they fry their chicken in extra virgin olive oil. Note that although people don't usually use olive oil to deep fry items due to it's low smoking point, BBQ Chicken claims they have developed a special olive oil which has a higher smoking point. The olive oil used at this outlet is specially brought in from Korea. To enhance their food quality, they even have a Chicken University in Korea where they develop the food and train the franchise holders.

Teri-Q Wings

The menu has a variety of chicken items but their signature dish is the Olive Luxury Chicken with a super crunchy crust (RM12.50 for 2 pieces). All the items come with a set - a choice of either seafood fried rice or mashed potatoes and coleslaw. If you opt to just eat the chicken pieces, the charge is the same. Although the chicken pieces are relatively small, by the time you tackle the whole plate of coleslaw and sides, it's actually a substantial portion. Prices here aren't cheap though and definitely higher than the Kentucky Fried Chicken. Aside from the Olive Luxury Chicken, they also have a Hot Version which is coated with a spicy sauce. Also available is a Korean favourite - Ginseng Power Crunch (RM14.50 for 2 pieces). You can actually taste the ginseng in the fried chicken making it less sinful and a healthier meal. What is good about their fried chicken is the skin is crunchy while the chicken remains juicy within.

Ginseng Power Crunch

If you prefer non deep fried items, they also do grilled chicken like Charbroiled Chicken (RM14.50 for 2 pieces) and Jerk BBQ Chicken. Having tasted both items, I prefer the Jerk BBQ Chicken which has a stronger flavour but I do remember it was very pricey versus the other menu items. Aside from the sets, you can also order their popcorn chicken and the Teri-Q Wings(RM7.50 for 4 pieces). These wings taste awesome with a slight chewy texture from the use of glutinous rice flour in the batter. Some of the items are cooked in an enclosed show kitchen especially the chargrilled items. Other items on the menu are noodles and Korean desserts served with red beans.

I reckon the only setback of this place is the higher prices which may drive the customer towards Kentucky Fried Chicken. However for the health concious and those who appreciate juicy chicken with super crunchy batter will definitely keep coming back here.

that's alot of chicken! hehehe. I used to think that fried chicken is fried chicken. Now, I'm amazed by the varieties one can have. Ginseng Power crunch and olive oil.. that's certainly interesting.. although I remembered reading somewhere that Olive Oil can't be used for deep frying? Something about their lower smoking point...and after that they become more toxic that canola oil? hmmm... i wonder...

Passed by this outlet a few times but never tempted to try it out. But after seeing your photos and review, I think I'll change my mind. :)

thxs for the reminder, I need to include the issue on the smoking pt on olive oil. This place claims their olive oil can take the heat as it's specially developed.

Hi, If you liked the teri chicken wings, please try out the restaurant called HanChon also located in Sri Hartamas. Its exactly next to Backyard Pub and in my opinion, its WAY better than BBQ Chicken. Its also from Korea. Go there and order the Original Wings set. You won't be disappointed.
