It's strange how there are some parts of Kuala Lumpur which I have not been for ages. One of these places is Kepong which has now been completely transformed with the emergence of new development. There's a huge Carrefour and Jusco plus lots of shophouses which now house numerous businesses and restaurants around this area. In a way it's a good idea to rejuvenate the place but it's also sad to see the older shophouses pushed to the back and the side as the newer ones take over prime spots.
One day, we decided to make a trip here to sample the yong tau foo which Babe in the City - KL had highly recommended. It's pretty easy to locate the place as it's just next to Carrefour. Lots of competition around this place for customers as already in that row of shophouses, there's two to three restaurants vying for business. Although they mainly sell yong tau foo items, they also have a pretty extensive list of dishes such as vinegar pork leg, steamed stingray (something unusual as it's usually grilled) with various sauces, fried paper chicken, prawns with salted egg yolk, steamed cuttlefish and etc.
We ordered a selection of their yong tau foo and was surprised to see them serve it with soup and lots of sweet potato leaves. That was definitely a plus point for me as I love sweet potato leaves and it was nice and healthy too. The bittergourd stuffed with fish paste was not bad and I loved the smooth texture of their tofu. We also ordered a small selection of the fried items - the bean curd and the aubergine. It's all fried as and when you order it so it's fresh and nice but I did find the aubergine to be slightly oily as here it's deep fried versus pan fried in other places.
What was really good was their rice wine chicken, a favourite of mine. With the right amount of rice wine added, chunks of free range chicken, shreds of ginger, black fungus strips and kei chi (Chinese wolfberries) in the claypot - it was simply heavenly right down to the last drop. Drink it up when it's hot and eat it with plain white rice as it's delicious. It can be quite "heaty" for this hot weather though so be prepared to sweat it out. Besides this chicken version, they also serve it with prawns. This dish definitely made the journey and the toll payment worth it and I'll definitely return to sample this again.
Fishing Village Restaurant

Taman Usahawan Kepong
Kepong
Tel No: 03 - 6250 6322
(Non Halal. This place is at the shophouses next to Carrefour. When you see Carrefour from the main road, turn left inside and go straight. You will pass by the large food court and take the right turn when you see Jalan Metro Perdana Timur 3. The restaurant is in the middle of the row of shophouses.)

Kepong certainly has a lot of good food places. Need to make an effort to go there more often..especially now that I know there is good rice wine chicken. yummy! A lot of places are not so generous with the wine.
Guess what? The best chicken wine and vinegared trotters I had were cooked by my Hubby! Guess next time I will enjoy my confinement period. Hahaha. Anyway..the yong tau foo with soups looks yummy. Must bring hubby to try the chicken wine too.
team bsg - oky oky! Maybe one day you take me to try real pangkor laksa.
lemongrass - yeah, so many places in Kepong that I have not explored. Already one row has a few restaurants so you imagine how many places there are at the new plus old developments! Mind boggling.
Precious Pea - wow, lucky you to have such a good hubby. Can we ta pau when he cooks extra?
Boo, he normally finished off the extra!! Haha..maybe next time we can have pot luck party? Then I get him to cook.
You really do have a talent for taking the best pictures of food, boo!
That first picture (bittergourd yong tau foo) looks like a mystical lake, if a hand came out and threw a sword to Merlin for King Arthur, I wouldn't be surprised!
precious pea has hubby's yummy chicken wine, i hav my mum's chicken (always) cooked in extra wine. Give me xtra ummpphhh n' heat.
Kepong....my house.
I tried before this restaurant also. For me their Yong Tau Foo is not bad. But i still prefer the one at Metro Prima, Ipoh Road Hakka Yong Tau Foo.
But this restaurant got others varieties of foods such as Rice Wine Chicken and also paper wrapped chicken. Both also not bad.
precious pea - sounds like a good idea to have a potluck.
an9ie - hmmmm, thxs for the compliment. Now that you mention it, that soup does look quite mysterious looking.
adrian - I guess this place is popular as quite clean and air cond. I really like their rice wine chicken, enough rice wine in there to have the essential kick.
jackson - You must take us to try Klang yong tau foo so we can also compare if it's good.
i would say the star of this place is the rice wine chicken! cant get enough of it!
babe - totally agree with you. Now my tummy wants to make a second trip there for the rice wine chicken.
Boo, when my new house is ready, we can have a gathering at my place. But will you guys give face and come or not??
Jackson, I used to love the chicken wine served at Shanky Restaurant, same row as Kayu Nasi Kandar at SS2, CheowYang area. Until one fine day, when they told me no more wine, something to do with their supplier. Sob sob.
precious pea - of course we will come as it's pea's hubby's yummy cooking plus we want to see the cute pea. Aww, that's sad abt Shanky.
I've tried this YongTauFu too but i would like to recommend the Klang Ampang YongTauFu too, its famous with their paper wrap chicken, baba curry chicken and royal herbal chicken, it suits the kid and the adults...
