Whenever you feel hungry, just wander around Petaling Street and you will find an abundance of snacks to satisfy your rumbling tummy. During one of my walkabouts, I found this stall selling my favourite apam balik(RM0.50 for one piece) made with coconut milk slightly flavoured with pandan leaves. It has fresh coconut shreds mixed within it making each bite a fragrant one especially when eaten warm or piping hot. The apam which is also known as the Malaysian pancake comes in many forms and this particular one is known as the Chinese version. The pancake is cooked in small pans where the outside is crispy and the inside is nice and soft. It's then quickly folded into half when it's taken out from the pan. Sometimes, slices of bananas are added in between the apam.
The stall also serves another version of apam balik which is more popular as it's filled with crushed peanuts (RM0.50 per slice). This is similar to the crispy peanut pancake known as Ban Chean Koay in Chinese except it has a softer texture. It's usually cooked in a large pan. Once it's cooked, it will be divided into slices to be sold.

Yum! I think I had something like this recently at a restaurant called Caravan of Dreams in NYC...
Yup, this is one of the best in KL area.

Gosh, i never knew so many blogs are dedicated to food, and really good ones that is! Furthermore, some are with recipes too *drool*
Btw, i'm KL-ian too but not residing there though :(
kate - Glad to hear NY is serving this. I've heard quite a bit abt Fatty Crab which also serves Msian food so do check that out.
tulan - wow! You must be a P Street expert. I didn't know it's famous but I liked the pancake a lot.
joan - Yeah, apam balik really rocks esp with lots and lots of peanuts.
cherie - welcome to the world of foodies who blog abt it all the time! Hope it won't get too "sien" for you after a while.
After browsing for the past 2 hours of blogs and more blogs, i'm totally speechless. So many droolicious photos!
Nope, i don't think i can ever get sien. Hehe. Bakin' n cookin' is in my blood. In fact, i'm gonna bake tonight with my newfound recipe! :P
Btw, your photos are most beautifully captured. Mind sharing what camera u using? Thanks heaps :)
Just wondering. DO you ever get scolded by the food vendor for taking pictures at their stalls? Cos I itch to take pix sometimes, but fear that some people don' like it.
love apam balik, especially the ones made with coconut milk and with cream corn filling within... haven't found good ones in SG yet :(
Whoa!! Excellent stuff you've got here.
Are you familiar with the Penang variety of Apams where they have a whole assortment of fillings - from ham & cheese, to tuna, peanut butter, raisins, you name it.
Glad to meet fellow food-bloggers. Mine's at http://salivate.blogspot.com
Love to exchange notes.
cherie - glad you enjoy the food blogs. Stick around for more foodie pixs. I use an old Sony Cybershot that's no longer selling in the market.
lin - I usually pay for my food and then take pixs so they know I'm not just taking free pixs. I also ask them politely if I can take pixs.
Cath - awww, looks like a trip to KL is needed to satisfy your apam balik standards.
yyyap - yeah, I read abt the many varieties you all have in Penang. Yet to try it though as I'm usually chomping on other stuff when I am in Penang.
You can try one kiosk at Giant Shah Alam called Apam Balik Flaming. Many choices and very clean or visit Apam Balik blog at
