Beef Ball Noodles @ Soong Kee, Jalan Tun Siew Sin, KL

This week, let's kick off with the ever popular Beef Ball noodles which is found in downtown Kuala Lumpur. It's always a perpetual traffic gridlock around this area as the buses are crowding around looking for a space to park and wait for customers. Most of the times, it makes better sense to walk to the restaurant versus driving to it.

This is THE place for my family when it comes to beef balls. Even my mother remembers eating here when she was younger. Although the place has taken a slightly modern look with dark glass windows and air conditioners pumping out cool air, the kitchen at the back remains as busy and hectic as I always remember. Most of the items like the minced meat topping is prepared ahead but the noodles, vegetables and beef balls must be cooked a la minute.

Since I was a kid, this has been my order - Dry Loh Shue Fan (rat tails noodles in English) with midnight black minced meat topping and an order of beef balls on the side. The minced meat topping is deliciously fragrant. Mix it in with your choice of noodles and you'll be asking for a second helping.

The beef balls are famous here as they're springy like fish balls. They use freshly minced beef which they cut up themselves. Similar to making fishballs, the minced meat is whacked around until it becomes tender and slightly springy.

Something else you can also order with your noodles is the mixed beef slices, tripe and tendons. Everything is so tender especially the tendons which melt in your mouth.

It's always super busy in this restaurant but service is fast here. Do also try their chilli sauce to dip your beef balls, it packs a punch and adds a kick to the beef balls. Only problem with this type of food is it's laced with quite a lot of MSG to make it tasty. Since I'm extremely sensitive to MSG, I was suffering the whole afternoon from thirst and a slight headache.

Hmmm....
Seems like most of the Beef Ball Noodle places in KL are using these shortcuts (EVIL MSG!) to make it nice...

This MSG ( Chinese Rest.Syndrome )thing seems to leave quite many of u flustered ! like Jcolate 4 eg ! Its inevitable I suppose for commercial restaurant food.

Thats why we have super cooks like BabeKL, RM, AudreyC ( & U too boo_licious ?) to save us !

Looks like we're on different camps on this one, I prefer Ngau Kee's version at Jalan Tong Shin. Though it's not as good when it's not done by Ngau Kee and Ngau So herself ;o)

meiyen and jackson - never mind, there's always fish balls.

whistler - no wonder so tasty, a lot of MSG.

J - I think most places use MSG. It's their shortcut to yumminess.

tonixe - yeah, MSG is a killer factor for me as I'm sensitive towards it.

wmw - yet to try Ngau Kee. Will do soon per yr recommendation. We tend to eat at Petaling St area more since my aunt lives around the area.

meiyen - sorry no fishball here. I meant, you can eat fishball noodles instead since both of you don't take beef whether it's for health or religious purposes.

fatboybakes - yeah, they taste good even though it's been laced with MSG.
