a dose of char siu keeps the blues away....
Time to update your blog or even your own personal radar on food places, Meng Kee Char Siu - that iconic place has shifted from Tengkat Tung Shin to nearby Jalan Alor. The change that happened about a month back is due to the landlord taking back the shoplot, as it changed hands. Quite sad, as that old place was full of character.
chop chop chop - goes the char siu
They have now moved to a corner coffeeshop place that is relatively quiet during the daytime (looks like more night time activities at this place for Thai food) except for an economy rice stall. Right next to Nova Hotel, it is a pretty good location, since parking is readily available (at a price of RM5) nearby.
taugeh diet anyone? just eat it with char siu
It has been a while since I dined here, probably because I've always favoured their Glenmarie outlet (just a hop and a skip away from the office). Not sure whether it was just me but I honestly felt things were a little slow there. I was expecting almost no char siu available for me, since I was quite late for lunch but they had loads of char siu still hanging on metal skewers at the shop. It was very easy to also score a table.
the chicken is not too bad
The test is always in the taste and one must admit that the char siu isn't as great as long ago - no melt in the mouth stickiness taste I look for and the cut they gave me was way too lean (even though I asked for half fat/half meat). Honestly, the Glenmarie version is much better, if one has to pick between the two outlets. However, it is just because Glenmarie's char siu has a softer texture and a nice caramelised outer layer BUT it still does not beat other top-notch places like Famous Seremban Favourites in Sunway Mas or Spring Golden in Shah Alam. Maybe that explains the lack of people crowding at this place.
Surprisingly the poached chicken was very good (soft yet firm) and this time, they trump Glenmarie. There's also healthy taugeh, if you wish to opt for a non-carbo diet (but loads of porcine goodness). For more pictures, see my Flickr set and click this link for the previous blog post.

Exactly what I was talking about today on my blog post. Salad + Char Siu... yummz
Wanted to go there last Sunday with McCutie, but they were closed. Spoiled my diet plans. LOL
y'know, i've never had their char siew. if only they'd open for dinner!
I saw the Moved sign when I passed by that iconic grease-encrusted shop the other evening and couldn't help feeling a little sad, like an end of an era. I hope it picks back up again for them!
The char siew looks a bit dry. Could be improved with a dash of the char siew gravy, perhaps ?
It reminds me the day we first met, remember we ended our outing with Meng Kee Char Siu at Glenmarie outlet, complete with thunderstorm! Haha!
yes time to update my blog and my diet - taugeh + char siew = ultimate haha
oohhh.. long time didint hv their charsiew already..but for me, here is more convenient since SA is really far..guess i'll nvr be able to taste their Glenmarie ones!
taugeh diet here i come!
oh good to know.. cheers! ( i bet still expensive though)
Hah?? they had moved already??? But I think that I'll go to Glenmarie instead as it's nearer
the super duper famous meng kee! heard about it but never been there yet.
the char siew are way too lean and coarse and i find their chicken so-so only.
yaa i actually like their chicken probably more than the char siu!
Boo_licious, how does their char siu compare with Restoran Oversea? We usually go to the latter for our fix whenever we're back in KL.
Oooh thank goodness for your blog. Am looking forward to a slab of char siu and hot white rice the moment I get back. Mmmm
qwazymonkey - honestly, u're better off somewhere or maybe u can ask for the fattier bits as they seem to give very lean bits here.
Sean - wow! They're an icon in KL.
550ml - yeah the old place had character I felt, here the feeling is very flat. Just a typical coffeeshop already.
Borneoboy - yeah it was dry and they didn't give any sauce also.
Precious Pea - that Klang makan trip was so fun. Still rememeber staring at the roast duck and WMW asking us, can finish or not?
rokh - yeah, taugeh everything and do away with rice!
nomadgourmand - hmmm, you try and let me know if it's just me?
Joe - hee hee, it shld be patented!
C&C - u're welcome.
Leo - yeah, landlord issues hence the move.
Wilson & Rachel - shld go with Sean as he has nvr been there before.
foodbin - so it's not only me!
Thxs kulsoom.
KY - yeah, the chicken was so much nicer than the char siu.
Sngtey - Overseas is much much better. This one has dropped in std a lot.
Paprika - am sure London char siu will be very good. Must admit I only have memories abt roast duck and none on char siu.
Have not tried meng kee but the spring golden in shah alam one is good!
eiling - stick to spring golden, meng kee's legendary char siu seems to have dulled with time.
this store/restaurant is not located at Alor... it is located a Jalan Tengkat Tong Shin... different street from Jalan Alor (basically behind)...it is not next to Nova Hotel as well, is located at opposite Abeille d'Or Corporation Sdn Bhd (not sure this comp moved or not)
Hungry Blogger, it used to be at Tengkat Tong Shin. Just moved to this new premises abt a month ago. Time to update?
definitely FSF for the win. though i've yet to try the Shah Alam's version. Spring Golden's sakura pork.
GREAT idea for Taugeh diet, eating it with Char Siew!
I am glad the wifey took me here as a treat before I left KL on my recent trip home ;-)
Cheers, and HAPPY NEW YEAR ...
ps - J2Kfm, Shah Alam (Yes!) Max's SPRING GOLDEN Sakura Pork from Ipoh certainly ROCKS ;-) Tell him Julian set you!
