Ais Batu Campur @ Ah Keong's ABC Stall, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur

The weather has been kinda crazy - super hot one minute and then torrential rain the next. I often search for something to cool down during those hot moments. This small stall at Brickfields, just in front of the 7 Eleven stall and near the YMCA is one of my essential stop overs especially when I am in Kuala Lumpur.

Run by a couple, they're actually a favourite place for people to partake in a little refreshment. What's really popular is their fresh young coconut juice. Most people pack back their drinks as they have limited sitting space in front of their stall.

It's at this stall you find a slightly different version of Ais Batu Campur Special (RM2.50) which we popularly know as Ais Kacang. The shaved ice is topped with shreds of young coconut flesh to add a doubly refreshing kick. Tinged with rose syrup for colour, you mix it into the shaved ice which is flavoured with gula melaka syrup and evaporated milk. Depending on how sweet you like your Ais Batu Campur, you can ask them to increase the gula melaka syrup. Underneath all the ice lies the rainbow of goodies - black cincau (grass jelly) cubes, green cendol, red bean mash, large kidney beans and yellow corn kernels. Mix up the whole concoction to slake your thirst during these crazy humid days.

This is also one of my regular stops for air kelapa. It's so refreshing to drink it on the way back to the office in the hot sun. :-)

Too bad I'm not a big fan of coconut. Always get stomach upset after consuming it. :(

I had a bowl of ABC last two weeks and that was the first time my two kiddies tasted ABC. Its a simple ABC. Ada redbeans, corn kernel, cincau and atap chee. Not bad for $3.00.

My biggest complain about ABC these days is that the ice shaving is not fine. Coarse ice shaving makes a bad bowl of ABC. (Especially those ice crushing machines at the hotel buffet lines are the worst!) So, how's the ice? Fluffy?

Hi Boo,
Sorry for the off-topic question. I know you're pretty much based in KL but do you have any places to recommend for Malacca? I'm planning to drive down (roadtrip!!) for a stayover during Easter.
Thanks,
D

fulltime mom - can you drop me an email at boo_liciouskl@yahoo.com. Must ask you abt yr Subang Jaya area eats.

lemongrass - I know. I usually stop by here when I'm stuck in Jalan Tun Sambanthan's silly jam. Stupid me, I forgot New Lay Sin was closed this morning so made a fruitless turn into Brickfields.

precious pea - don't blame you as it's something we're just not used to.

tankiasu - awww, am sorry to hear that. Tried Hayn's again, love his pastas - super yummy stuff.

flower - sounds like a well spent AUD3. Maybe you can get those tiny ice shavers and make this at home.

team bsg - nice rite? as it's such a clever way to utilise their coconuts which is their best seller.

wanderlust - this particular one is more on the uniqueness of it's topping and not the fluffy type. For really fluffy type - head towards PJ Old Town's Medan Selera. Two stalls do it so well there it literally melts in your mouth when it touches the tongue.

D - can give you some recommendations. Drop me an email at boo_liciouskl@yahoo.com. Will recommend you some places.

fbb - yup! stop by for one.

meiyen - I guess when you're around that area, it will be a good idea.

Oh nice nice. Brings back memories of my time in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. In Tanjung Aru beach, there's a nice stall that serves stuffs like the ones you wrote too ... very similar to Gurney Drive.

Gosh I miss the ABC, the coconut water adn the rojak ... hm....

That for RM2.50??? Not bad! I had lousy Ais Kacang in Redang for RM8.00. :(

Fresh..yes fresh coconut!!! What do they do with the coconut water?

wmw said...

Wow....need to get myself a bowl of this. Craving for Malaysian food/delights after my time away.

timothy - that sounds good, the beach and good food.

D - replied already. Hope you enjoy yrself.

Honey Star - wow! Must be a five star ais kacang.

teckiee - they serve it to customers. Usually their coconut water is more popular as people just drop by to have a glass.

wmw - am sure you have started eating Msian delights. I thought I saw you at Hayns on Sat nite but wasn't sure since you didn't say hi! Maybe it was yr twin.

Boo, we have the small ice shaver at home. Tapi lagi sedap kalau orang lain buat..... Beside my ice shaver didnt produce the same texture of the typical ice shaving. A bit too kasar....

That was my twin! Ha ha ha..I only came back on Sunday! Hmmm....

boo_licious said...

fulltime mom - how was pilates? You do the mat type or the machine ones?

tummythoz - no problems. Hope you like it. For the fluffy type, do venture to PJ as they are the best.

flower - yeah, always taste nicer when people make it.

wmw - must have been as she really looked like you. Are you sure yr parents didn't tell you abt yr twin sister?

I do the machine type at this place in Wisma Perintis, Damansara Heights. It was a good session, I really needed all those stretches after sitting and typing for so long. Got deadlines to meet, what to do?

wmw said...

I hope I am the cuter of the two...but I have had friends telling me they saw me here and there, when I was there and here in the first place. Ha ha ha....My mom? Hmm, maybe somethings are better left unsaid. LOL...

boo_licious said...

fulltime mom - ok. Don't think I know that one as my friends go to the one in TTDI Wisma Bakti.

wmw - ooopss.

Hello masak masak folks,

Sorry to make my first post about something other than food! I saw that you were talking about Pilates. My girlfriend has just started teaching again in KL. If you are interested, she teaches mat classes around KL. She is an excellent instructor, but I would think that wouldn't I?! She has a website at www.sophiaoh.com

masak masak is a great website. I was first told about it by my friend Suling a year ago. If you are looking for new places to review, I recently found a good Chinese seafood place on Jalan Ipoh about 5 units to the left of HSBC (as you look at it). They do a great steamed tilapia in sweet/spicy sauce.
