New Doughnut Varieties @ Big Apple Donuts, The Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur

Let's have a sweet start to the week with some doughnuts. I was hanging out at the Pavilion while Splashie Boy was at Low Yat Plaza for work. My intentions was just to browse through the books in Times. Spied the Nigella Express and Martha Stewart's new cookbook, both looked interesting and very tempting. Managed to resist them which I was immensely proud of considering I have a certain weakness for cookbooks. While I was browsing through the books, I sniffed the unmistakable aroma of doughnuts. At first I thought Times had started their cafe hence I went to investigate. Following the scent, I found out Big Apple Donuts had opened their new outlet on the sixth floor right next to Zen by Secret Recipe and the yet to open Wong Kok Chan Teng.

There weren't long snaking queues like J Co. Donuts downstairs so it was relatively easy to spy what you wanted. A pretty big space to work at, you could see them preparing the doughnuts, frying and dipping each one of them with the various frostings. I decided to get half a dozen to try the new varieties. This particular one was called 101 Dalmatians since it resembled the trademark black spots on white - in this case black sesame seeds on white chocolate. Not bad we felt and the sesame seeds had a nice crunch.

Kinda look like they borrowed the BreadTalk idea as they have coated it with spicy chicken floss. I didn't get to try this but I would imagine it to be similar to the BreadTalk version minus the cloying cream within.

There were two filled ones which I am not too sure about their names but this should be the Mochachino which will probably taste similar to the J Co's mocha cream version.

Another new variety - the Kiwi Blitz with a dollop of eyecatching green jam in the middle. Splashie Boy had this and said it was a bit sourish with the jam and he didn't quite like this one.

There's a durian version known as Duren Duren. Resembling the thorny fruit, there's thorns sticking out here which are slightly crispy compared to the other parts of the doughnut. The cream filling is whipped cream flavoured with durian. Not bad but they aren't too generous with the filling.

Last but not least, the Chocoholic filled with chocolate cream. Notice how unsmooth the chocolate topping is. Tastewise, the doughnuts are soft and these are unusual toppings compared to J Co. Donuts variety. One plus point is there's almost no waiting time for these doughnuts as the queue for J Co. Donuts was so long. Hence if you can't wait, try the sixth flour for a sugary fix.

Love their donuts, only complaint is their stingy filling...J Co would fare better in terms of generosity though.

yeah i agree, the durian variety's filling were simply too skimpy .. and to pay such money for donut .. sad (foodielianne)

so is big apple nicer or jco nicer?

Ha, I just had these today. I think I prefer JCo's proportions, texture and mellow colours as opposed to Big Apple's vividly scary ones. But Big Apple uses real cream wherelse JCo uses nasty reconstituted stuff. Hmmm,... Krispy Kreme!!!

The durian design is very creative indeed. Like to sesame 'dalmation' theme :). By the way, I have to share the new recipe I found in Singapore --> chewy donut with generous creme filling and savoury toppngs of your choice. Check out at Chewy Juniors!

terez - heard abt Donut Factory and their crazy queues too.

cat cat - think durian banned in USA due to the smell!

ling239 - such a cute name for it.

nic - wow, loads of food at Pavilion so do explore.

yammylicious - now you have option, no queue at Big Apple!

cest la vie - no worries, I only ate 1 1/2 doughnuts. The rest when to a friend.

xiu long bao - yup, eat J Co and the filling pours out.

such a cute name, imbi and itchy. Yup filling not generous at all.

buttercup - aiks! Read only after lunch or else tummy rumbles.

mamabok - pretty unique varieties I think

Jun - Jco is better but Big Apple's varieties more localised with the durian version.

Paprika - wonder when Krispy Kreme coming in or they won't now they have assessed mkt competitors.

ndyeow - sounds good, we try the next time we are at Spore.

new kid on the blog - if u ate all at one go of course. Just ate 1 1/2 only. Rest were given away.

jesscet - dunno if KKreme will come here as I heard loss making venture.

I am speechless with delight at these beautiful and so interesting sounding donuts. I doubt we will ever see chicken floss on donuts here in the states tho...

terez - the queues seem to be getting worst! There shld be another outlet at Sunway Pyramid soon so hopefully things will die down.

Foodhoe - yeah, very customised for local tastes esp the creamy durian.
