Yau Char Kuai & Popiah @ Happy Garden Morning Market, Off Jalan Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur

Mention Yau Char Kuai or Chinese Crullers to my mother and she will go on and on like an Energizer Bunny about this particular stall. Far from our beaten track, she was introduced to this place by my aunt and uncle who frequent it since it is near their home in Taman Desa. In terms of directions, all she gave me was, "just go straight after the yummy siu yoke stall."

Luckily the directions worked and I easily found the morning market at Jalan Selesa. It's pretty happening for the residents here as you can see lots of people doing their morning shopping or just eating breakfast. Sandwiched between two rows of shophouses, the market is only street long and filled with stalls selling various items: vegetables, fish, meat, dried goods and food. I managed to locate the yau char kuai stall at the end of the road.

What came highly recommended was their Mah Kiok (the horseshoe) version. It was indeed glorious with a crunchy exterior topped with sesame seeds and a soft floury inside. Almost on par with the one I also like from Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang. Definitely well worth the trip here.

Also good is the Popiah which has been blogged by mycoffee before. However, this stall is only found during Thursday mornings as they move around this area, Puchong and Sri Petaling. Run by a couple, they also have another stall in Overseas Union Garden's morning market which is run by their daughther. The popiah is very good stuff and packed to the brim with ingredients for RM1.50. It has crispy batter bits like the Sisters Popiah version but I prefer their yam bean filling which is more flavoursome. Only problem is you need to eat it as soon as possible to totally enjoy the crunch of the popiah.

If you live around the area, it's worth a trip here as the popiah is good and so's the Mah Kiok. Only problem would be you need to make 2 trips here as the Yau Char Kuai fella is not available on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Happy Garden Morning Market
Jalan Selesa
Happy Garden
Off Jalan Kuchai Lama
Kuala Lumpur

(To get here, take the right from Old Klang Road to Jalan Kuchai Lama. Make a left at the first traffic light which is opposite Restaurant Talipon. Go straight and take a right (it's a series of one way streets so follow the signs) and then a left and the next right. Go straight through the housing area, you will pass by a row of shophouses with Mooi Mooi at the corner. Go straight down the road and you will eventually reach an area with shophouses in a square, Jalan Selesa is on the left hand side so find parking around the area.)
