Teochew Duck (Lou Ark) @ Restoran Kam Heong, Petaling Jaya

It's been ages since I ate here hence when my friend suggested this for last night's dinner, I was eager to try it out. Maybe everyone was out since it was a Sunday night plus Chap Goh Meh but this place was packed to the brim. The stall was so busy that this man was chopping the stewed duck non stop. A specialty of the Teochew clan, the duck is said to be simmered for a few hours on a slow flame with various spices and caramelised sugar. This precious gravy which absorbs the flavours of the duck and spices is then used to cook other items like the hard boiled eggs and tau kua.

Not only is the gravy used to cook other items, it's an important flavouring for all the dishes served here. At this stall, a claypot of the thick gravy is placed over a slow flame to keep it warm and every dish that comes out from the stall whether it's the chopped duck, intestines or etc, the server will spoon the hot gravy over the dish before serving it. The gravy is also used as a flavouring for the plain porridge.

The stewed duck is excellent here as the meat is smooth and tender. It goes really well with the smooth porridge but if you prefer a more substantial meal, you can also order rice.

We also ordered the intestines which were nice and crunchy. You can choose from the dishes which is kept warm over a slow fire - braised mushrooms and braised pork trotters.

Another essential accompaniement for the porridge is the salted vegetable (ham choy) which makes eating all that duck slightly less guilty. If you wish to eat at this place, do come early to get a table. Service is efficient as there's an army of people rushing around in their trademark orange and black t-shirts to get dishes doused in the gravy and delivered as soon as possible.

  8. Friends & I used to go there in the mornings for the Prawn Mee. V don't find d porridge exceptional tho, except for the price. The drinks on the high side too, especially after they've renovated and appeared to have officially conquered the walkway.

  11. I never liked duck wing until I had theirs!! You can really taste the spices in the wing tips! It was fabulous!

But having said that, I find their duck meat not as tasty. Maybe it's because I tapau back? Twice I tapau, twice I find it so-so. Tender for sure, but also full of MSG as I was very thirsty after that.

I also saw people ordering trotters which was among the dishes of ham choy and intestine. Did you try? It looked interesting.

  12. lemongrass - yeah, it's also on the way home for you. Just make a detour from the Fed Hway.

meiyen - they also serve the softer type of intestines but the crunchy ones are nice.

sc - yeah, the seafood porridge during the day is pricey.

fbb - ask someone to take you there, since she always eat there after church!

tummmythoz - any other place you can recommend that serves yummy loh arp?

xiu long bao - hope she like it.

kat - yeah, I drank herbal tea with dinner so not so much effect for MSG. No idea abt why the duck does not taste so nice? Maybe no special sauce on top? Sorry didn't try the trotters.

jackson - once in a while. Think I have not eaten stewed duck for a long time.
