Just watched an excellent episode of Chic Eats entirely on desserts. Great for those of you who have a sweet tooth as they made these amazing cupcakes that resemble the city skyline complete with King Kong, featured this restaurant which serves desserts only in Barcelona and Sam Mason's crazy desserts. If you wish to recreate the cupcakes, the recipe is online at the website. Strange the series is known to us as Chic Eats but it's called Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie in the USA.
Back to savoury items instead of desserts, this time round it's pan meen. Located just off the Arab Square in the Bukit Bintang area, you can't miss this shop when you're driving down the slope of Jalan Beremi. If you're walking from the office area of Jalan Raja Chulan, it's definitely good cardio exercise since it's uphill all the way till you reach the shop.
Originally concocted during the Japanese occupation when rice was scarce, the noodles now come in various forms. My mother remembers childhood days when they used to just scoop out the pan meen dough with a spoon and boil it in the anchovy (ikan bilis) stock and vegetables. Nowadays, the dough is stretched and hand torn into tiny pieces (known as mee hoon kuih) or flattened and cut up to resemble wantan mee or fettucine strands. You can also opt to have it with soup or dry.
Since it was still pretty hot that day, I had the dry version with the thick and flat noodles. Tossed in dark soy sauce and topped with crunchy anchovies (ikan bilis), minced meat and sliced chinese mushrooms, it was delicious. Accompanied with the anchovy stock and a good portion of sayur manis leaves, I was glad I made the steep walk to get here. For those who love spice, they serve a pretty good sambal that you can add to your noodles as much as you like. Top it with a squeeze of calamansi juice and enjoy the heat. They also serve fish balls and meatballs with the noodles if you prefer.
Pan Meen Shop
Along Jalan Beremi
Kuala Lumpur
(Non Halal. Open from Monday to Saturday from morning till 2.30 pm. To get here, if you're driving down Sg Wang Plaza towards Jalan Sultan Ismail, turn left after the McDonalds. You will pass by Fortuna Hotel on your left hand side. The shop is further down on the left hand side.)

ReplyDeleteI was watching Chic Eats too! It is my new mission to eat at Espai Sucre before 2010! My god, my mouth was watering so much I nearly drowned! Can't wait to watch repeat! Anyway, haven't tried this pan mee but have been to the one at Jangan Ketawa (yes, odd name for coffee shop!), also off Arab Square. Its not too bad!
ReplyDeleteis this the one behind wisma genesis? so many pan meen spin offs here haha
ReplyDeletepaprika - I hope I ate at the right one. Yeah, I saw Jangan Ketawa but didn't know they served Pan Meen there.
ReplyDeleteIt was definitely one of the better episodes of Chic Eats as some of them have been super boring. Sounds like a great idea to visit Espai Sucre, I know I was also drooling over everything and contemplating how to make it to Barcelona.
babe_kl - yes, behind Menara Genesis. Is this one the famous one or the Jangan Ketawa? I thought it was pretty good esp the texture of the thick noodles but if Jangan Ketawa is better, don't mind trying it.
Hasn't the Jgn Ketawa one moved across the road? Thought u were describing the Jgn Ketawa pan mee.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I guess then this is the Jangan Ketawa pan meen. I'm kinda clueless as there's no signboards at this shop except Mandarin banners which I'm too banana to understand! plus the Jangan Ketawa signboard is still up at the other shophouse facing the Arab Square. Thanks for the info lemongrass.
ReplyDeleteMany said that it was way better when is was just a stall serving along Genesis backlane. Maybe it was d novelty of sweating buckets under the canopy/umbrellas in office wear. Been there done many times. However, only been once to its shop where the signboard is. TQ for d reminder.
ReplyDeletetummythoz - No problemos! Am sure you're the expert here since yr office is nearby. Hope it turns out good as the stall last time.
ReplyDeleteLooks good but hardly go to that area nowadays. But I guess after eating, I can just roll down the hill! Ha ha ha....
ReplyDeletepretty near yr tung shin area and yeah, one can definitely roll down that steep hill.
ReplyDeleteso if this is the same one, i'll feed u wid some info hahaha... the pan meen stall over here, shui kee and behind istana; together wid sister's noodles (drunken chic noodle) are run by 6 sisters!
ReplyDeletebabe_kl - wow, big family and full of cooks. Thxs for the nugget of info.
