The weekend is almost here so time to start thinking about weekend food! Am sure every PJ-ite will know of Raju's or has eaten here before. If you haven't, you don't know what you're missing. This is basically my family's favourite hangout place and also the place where relatives get a taste of roti canai whenever they drop by town.
There's a nice place to sit under the trees and you can catch a glimpse of La Salle School's football field. Nowadays they have moved the roti canai and thosai cooking areas outside so you get to see how your roti canai is prepared. The man will prepare the dough by stretching and flipping it around. Once it's stretched, it's laid to rest on the side. As and when orders come in, he will cook the roti canai on the hot plate.
Thosai is another specialty at Raju's that there's even a little plastic thosai man greeting you at the front of the restaurant. The thosai is cooked on round hot plates until crispy. Once done, it's slowly rolled and served.
At Raju's, you can order the fried items to eat with your breakfast. Usually it's their ikan bulus, skinny silver fish that's delicious when fried as the flesh is sweet and flaky. If it's small, you can even crunch the bones and eat all of it up. My mother prefers their ikan tenggiri as the cutlets are not dried out like other places.
Although some say Raju's should be avoided for their cut throat prices, we tend to come here purely because they do the best roti canai in town. Crispy on the outside, flaky like a croissant and with just a whisper of oil, it's best eaten plain and enjoyed when piping hot. One is never enough and there's always requests from every one to make sure it's "super garing"!
We have recently discovered sinful stuff - their fried sotong which is definitely better than Kanna's. It's reminds me of the barely coated battered sotong in Muhibbah except here they fry it till dark brown. Delicious when eaten with crispy roti canai, it's become a wicked habit during weekends that both of us are addicted to!
Wash it all down with a hot and milky Teh Tarik kurang manis coupled with the Sunday papers for the perfect weekend. Besides Banana Leaf Rice served during lunchtime, Raju's also does great tea time snacks.

Oh Wow! You were just down the road from where I live. Raju's is still as famous as ever. Ever since I was a kid and living in the area. And THAT was a LONG TIME AGO! ;-) Glad you enjoyed it.

Ooo...I like Raju's too. Was introduced to Roti Pisang here and I absolutely love it! I took pictures and one of the "Welcoming" thosai too. Oh, by the way, I also like the curry puff here!
ReplyDeleteallan and nigel - yeah, Raju's is super famous! Lucky you to live so near, means you don't need to fight for parking but just walk there.
ReplyDeletewmw - never gone beyond their roti canai or thosai as that's already kept me happy all the time. Will give the roti pisang and curry puff a try the next time. Thxs for the tip.
My officemates and I used to go there for brekkie on Saturday before we start works. Love their roti canai. But for lunch, I love their crunchy bittergourd. Yummy....
ReplyDeleteI love their rolled up thosai mascot! They should make stuffed toys of it and sell it as merchandise. I'll definitely buy one =D
ReplyDeleteAm a big fan of Raju's too. Love their banana leaf selection, fresh fried fish and their tea time snacks. Be careful where you park, though; on my last visit there, I parked under a tree further down the road and it got splattered with bird droppings!

ReplyDeleteI VOW to have breakfast there tomorrow, rain or shine!!!
ReplyDeleteflower - the crispy roti canai is so yummy. Can't wait for the weekend now.
ReplyDeleted - LOL! I'll tell them they can start business with their "thosai" mascot. It kinda looks like a cigarette though.
lemongrass - you didn't win any lottery? Suppose to be good luck if your car gets hit by birds.
precious pea - do enjoy and remember to ask for garing roti canai ok? It's delicious just on it's own.
great pics!!!! I'm hungry for some roti canai now.
ReplyDeleteMy home is further down the road on Jln Gasing. Unfortunately, I'm on the other side of the planet.
boo...your post is a good reminder! :D
ReplyDeletehiya simmie! Haven't heard from you for a while. Hope the CNY was good and sorry for making you hungry for roti canai. Guess it's time to book a flight home quickly.
ReplyDeletemeiyen - hope you end up there this weekend like Precious Pea!
how's the cut throat price like? love good roti canai, didn't know anything about Raju, sure will try it out.
ReplyDeleteboo, if that were true, I'd be a rich woman by now lah. But come to think of it ah, I don't buy the lottery hor, so it'll be a case of the chicken and the egg, huh? Duh.:-P
ReplyDeletetekko - if I am not not mistaken, abt RM1. I lost the receipt. The fried sotong is abt RM7.
ReplyDeletejackson - it's just off Jalan Gasing and near the Thai Buddhist temple.
lemongrass - next time buy lottery! Who knows if you strike.
funny so many writeup on raju's on friday haha.. i always like their crispy tosai and not so much of their banana leaf rice.
ReplyDeleteVery good food but prices quite expensive. Went there with wife and son last week and ate 5 roti, 2 thosai, 2 pcs tenggiri, a small plate of mutton curry, a plate of chicken curry, 3 ikan Bulus and finally 3 teh tarik kurang manis. The total damage - MYR61.00
ReplyDeleteThe best thing about Raju's is the location. The food is so,so over-rated. After spending my new year hols in Singapore, we discovered Samy's Restaurant in Dempsey Road.
ReplyDeleteThey blow Raju's out of any food guide. Sure the prices are double - but hey, you get what you pay for.

Jackson, the uniforms are clean but not conclusive about the general hygiene. Friends from overseas complained about the shocking toilets the other day which can justify the local council closing down the restaurant for health risks! Also the cloth used to clean banana leaves was totally black! Confession - I go there every week for the roti.
ReplyDeleteThere's no way that I could eat this as breakfast, it's disgusting.
