This is ridiculous - Jalan Alor is renamed as Jalan Kejora

Am not sure if you all caught this, but per a report in the Star on Saturday, it seems DBKL has re-named Jalan Alor to Jalan Kejora!! From the article, it is quoted,

"...Jalan Alor’s name was changed at the request of the National Economic Action Council following decisions made in its exco meeting. With regard to that, DBKL’s Road Naming Committee concluded in its meeting that the name of Jalan Alor be changed to Jalan Kejora to go with other roads in the vicinity named after the stars...."

Er, first of all, are the roads nearby named after the stars??? I don't think Tung Shin means star unless they think, Jalan Bukit Bintang which is literally translated to Star Hill is the link to stars? Moreover Kejora, which is the Malay name for the planet Venus (also known as Zuhrah), isn't a star!?

Already there has been consternation among the hawkers who ply their trade on this infamous road. For decades, they have been referred to as THE place for food, especially for the tourists. Imagine, how difficult it will be for the tourists to look for a new place now even though they put Jalan Alor in brackets under Jalan Kejora. Moreover, Kejora ain't that easy to pronounce or spell either, especially for those who don't speak Malay. Just can't imagine us telling people, that it is Kejora Kai Yik (Kejora Chicken Wings) or Kejora Frog Legs Porridge they must try when they visit KL.

What do all of you think about this renaming exercise????

  1. I just don't get it. Why rename something already famous?! Just doesnt make sense. Maybe its trend now, just like Dato' Shah Rukh Khan case.. totally dumb.

  2. LOL...the government never fail to amuse me with their petty tasks like this.

I think its a waste of time AND money. I agree with the tourist part especially.

What I think about it personally? Well...more reason for government to spend our rakyat's money. Why? Well...new road=new signboards for the roads=money for the middleman

Seriously, don't fix what's not broken

  3. I was equally appalled when I read about this in the papers - could only shake my head in disbelief at the stupid things the authorities do these days! Wasting rakyat's money on something so senseless. Those ppl must be damn free and came up with this brilliant idea to make money! Stupid stupid stupid!

  4. Sounds like unnecessary confusion. Maybe when they are talking about nearby star names they are getting mixed up with Planet Hollywood.

  5. another example of profound stupidity of the powers that be...
apparently even the lonely planet guide lists jln alor...

  6. There is no need for rationality when it comes to things like these - renaming roads, tearing down buildings, fixing potholes, roadsigns. The people running the show are as rational as monkeys and the bananas they hold.

  11. what silliness!

  12. Gosh! I had just twisted my tongue trying to pronounce that word. LOL!

I just could not understand what's the motive behind the renaming. If it's for a normal residential estate, I might not disagree but for a well known food paradise that has been well known and mapped internationally? I just do not understand them anymore...

Well, on a positive note, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. (c) Shakespeare

  17. This definitely make tourist blur ..... When you say Jln Kejora ... Automatic I am thinking of Subang 2 area already. Coz all the roads there are named after space. eg. Jalan Cakerawala, Jalan marikh .....

  18. Reminds me of how a road in JB named "Jln Ngee Heng" was renamed to "Jln Tun Razak". After many years of using the name Jln Ngee Heng, and after many years of changing it to Jln Tun Razak, people are still using Jln Ngee Heng - no one...and I really mean no one...not even the young generation calls the road Jln Tun Razak.

So...the government can change the road name to Jln Kejora but it will always be Jln Alor to all of us.

  19. The NEAC's job is to review road names now? What a joke!

  20. obviously dbkl has nothing much to do, except for changing road names to confuse people - especially the tourist. also they like to go around issuing parking summons... did u see the Parking Review article in Star Metro? what a joke of a government this is, really shameful, no other country will change road names like this

  23. You realise its kinda a stupid matter and they even bring in politician into it. Haih.. Read the Star today and so fade up with it. What is our government trying to do.

  24. we all pay taxes to the government to do stupid things....they have got nothing better to do?! why don't they change other road name too?!! For example...jln tun razak, jln pudu....

  25. sean - don't think it is a "trend", more like a daily occurence.

volvoxx - ah, lining their own pockets. I guess this is going to be a major expense, since all the roadsigns will be changed.

pureglutton - shld go fix our economy vs bothering abt something so small like naming roads rite?

  26. paul - that's a good one..or maybe they were starstruck?

fbb - no wonder we need to drown our sorrows again, with this kinda administration!

  27. the expedited writer - LOL, you have definitely hit the nail at the rite spot!

    simplegirl - haha, alrite.

tummythoz - well, if not they have nothing to do except take long tea breaks!

radha - sigh, that's true. Very shocking how they altered facts we learnt in school to re-write history.

J - yeah, I have that same feeling, kinda like "bang head on table"

q - too bad they won't put this past them though...

criz - if u twisted your tongue, imagine all those foreigners!

  28. julian - I agree, that place is Jln Alor in my heart and tummy.

    well said, cumi & ciki!

precious pea - poor gal, she must be confused also!

irrestible - not only that! All the maps, Lonely Planet and etc also...

email2me - aiks, got repeat in Subang also. I suspect they plan to also re-name other roads here to Jln Marikh, Jln Utarid and etc. But first, they must decide, is it the stars they are going for or the planets. OR maybe it shld be Jln Shah Rukh Khan, since he is technically also a "star!"

cherrychocolatecandy - yeah, my colleague also told me the same thing in Penang, after they renamed Green Lane!

edpl - I know! I guess this is very impt to the economy.

patchcrazymags - nope, didn't read the parking review article but I can imagine!

mimi - yah lor, real waste of time and monies.

spunkz - yeah, very frus to have this kind of rulings that don't make head or tail.

tsukaka - yeah, somemore yesterday big headline also in the Star. Hope something will be done, pity those hawkers who are doing bizness.

pls june, don't tempt them, they might do it. Probably change it to something irrelevant also...

  29. hahaha....they won't change those road names which is so 'full of Malay culture' already.

i'm from penang, and there's a lorong near my house called "Love Lane". I wish this beautiful name can stay on forever. *praying*

  30. The DBKL people have nothing to do. Probably their mind rusted after sitting in the comfort zone for too long. I think Alor is a good name and better than Kejora!
