Dining Out @ Banquet, Bangsar Village II, Kuala Lumpur

Mango Salad (RM13)

Heavy editing involved with the photos this time as the light at this place wasn't too good. When the Banquet opened at Bangsar Village II, everyone was super excited. This was purely from the good vibes everyone experienced from Cafe Cafe owned by the same people. Although they may be sisters, they're total opposites of each other in terms of decor. While one is all dark with a Moulin Rouge inspired decoration, the Banquet is more like a garden cafe. Here, the palette is fresh white with mirrors to give it a sense of space. There's two areas to dine at - within the shoplot with ceiling to floor mirrors and a wooden deck within the shopping area which is surrounded by deep green faux Christmas trees.

Aromatic Chicken Wings (RM14 for 6 pieces)

The menu is a mix of old favourites and new items like the Asian themed dishes. Since there was a few of us, we ordered a variety to share. The table got a bit small for us after a while hence you'll see loads of dishes around. First to hit the table almost immediately after we placed our order was the Mango Salad. The consensus around the table was good for these tangy mango strips tossed in crushed peanuts, crunchy ikan bilis and chopped bird eye chilies. We couldn't resist the deep fried chicken wings. These were really tasty too as they marinated it with shrimp sauce before deep frying. Thumbs up to this dish!

Crispy Brie (RM23)

I have a soft spot for fried cheeses hence I ordered this to share. Although it's nice with the melted cheese interior, I thought it wasn't fantastic. They served it with a tangy sauce which complemented the rich cheese.

Chicken Casserole with White Wine and Mixed Mushrooms (RM35)

To be different, I ordered the chicken casserole which arrived quickly. I liked the rich flavour of the mushrooms and potatoes enhanced by the aromatic beef bacon. However, the chicken meat wasn't falling off the bone which is how I like my casseroles.

Oven Baked Butterfish Served with Honey Mustard Sauce (RM25)

Heard a lot of hype about this dish from the bloggers hence it was a must-have for the night. Takes a while to arrive as they have to slowly bake it in the oven to achieve that just cooked texture. The butterfish is actually quite tasteless and needs to be combined with the sauce. However use it sparingly as the sauce is very rich with a butter base mixed with seeded mustard and honey.

Wok Fried Special Noodles (RM18)

My friend SL ordered the noodles which smelt great. Tasted quite good too and she polished off the whole plate.

Illy Coffee

To end her meal, a must-have is a cup of Illy Coffee. Here they serve brown sugar cubes with their coffee. Coincidentally, I read a recent article on Illy at the Times Online which may interest you coffee lovers.

Tiramisu (RM18)

Feeling very full, we ordered one dessert to share i.e. their signature tiramisu served with mascarpone cheese and brandy soaked sponge. It may looked awful but tasted great especially the brandy soaked part. Such a tiny portion though which was slighly lopsided when it arrived at our table as the base was too laden with brandy.

Overall, it was a pretty satisfying meal and service was impeccable. When it had first opened, I had dined here and service was very slow but I noticed they bucked up tremendously. The deterrent in dining here again will be the pricing which I felt was higher than the average cafe.

  1. NOted lots of restaurant used honey mustard sauce for their oven baked fish... and at times, it does taste good at times it doesn't. i wonder why, could it be due to the time of marinate the fish? or rather the sauce?

  11. Tried this about 2 months ago, and would not eat there again. While their starters/snacks are fine, they absolutely fail at main courses. My other half tried some asian noodle soupy thingie which was mediocre, I tried the seafood pasta - which (on top of the seafood being not fresh) came swimming literally in .5 cm of oil...which tasted stale...horrendous.

Dessert was ok, service was ok, but not some place I would go back to.

Incidentally Marmalade in BV2 is as big of a disappointment. Have yet to go back to BV2 for ANY dining as the outlets I've tried so far have been terrible. Only Sakae sushi came out decent enough to warrant a 2nd visit.

  14. Went there when they first opened for lunch. I must say love the setting but the menu price is too expensive for brunch and lunch crowd and don't really offer anything suitable for Sunday brunch. It would be a better place for dinner I guess. Been to the other outfit of theirs, Cafe Cafe and love the dessert there! Try the Lemon Tart... yum!
