I have fond memories about this 40 year old stall as we used to eat Hokkien Mee right across this stall. Sadly the Hokkien Mee stall is no longer there but this place still remains. It's still as popular as ever so come early to eat their porridge as food finishes quite early.
It's run by an old couple with the old man being in charge. He's the one who gets to chop the poached chicken while the wife will pour the sauce and oil over it. Right next to their stall, you will see three tall metal pots being kept warm over individual gas stoves. Every once in a while, their helper will stir the porridge to make sure it does not get stuck. Find your seat around the shop's frontage or around the pavement. Everything is prepared ahead - the raw fish slices in a pile, poached chicken to be chopped as and when an order is placed, fried intestines (they keep them in a plastic bag in one of the drawers of the stall) and etc. Rumour has it, this old man has made lots of money from his stall that every night, a Mercedes will come and pick him up after the stall is closed.
You get three types of porridge here - chicken shreds, raw fish and mixed pig's innards. The porridge here is the ultra smooth type from boiling it for a total of 7 hours and is slightly sweet. I decided to sample the mixed pig's innards porridge (chee chap chuk) which came topped with crunchy fried intestines, pork balls and a mix of the innards. Really yummy stuff which I totally enjoyed.
Also good is their poached chicken that is smooth. Once the chicken is chopped by the owner, they pour a soy sauce with a tinge of oil to give it extra flavour. This stall is extremely popular with the office workers around here after work. Quite a few people pack back their porridge to eat it at home since it can get quite dusty around this area with the buses stopping in front of the stall. I even spied two men in a Brabus tuned Mercedes who came to pack back the porridge in a huge metal pot for their boss.

Can i know how the Chinese make the porridge/congee?
ReplyDeleteI am a Malay who love to devour Chinese food (as long as it is Halal :-)) and i love to make/cook simple Chinese food at home (mostly stir fry). But i still didn't manage to make a nice Chinese Porridge. Do i need to have a rice cooker that have a Porridge Function? :)
Your information is highly appreciated...

ReplyDeleteTheir chicken meat was smooth and not too oily, just good enough to go together with the porridge.
The stall owner was having brisk business everyday.
