When it comes to best eats in town, this particular char siu place is said to rank quite high with raves from people. Following their lead, I once checked this place out. As predicted, there was a queue for the char siu prior to it making it's debut at noon. If you don't wish to wait, the other alternative would be their poached and roasted chicken which is ready in the early morning.
This particular stall located opposite the 7 Eleven is run by a family which originally started out as an economy rice stall. They started selling char siu which sold so well hence they continued selling barbeque meats instead. Every day, the char siu is prepared at the kitchen by the owner of the shop while his children and wife man the restaurant by taking orders. Nowadays, they also serve a few economy rice dishes sold during lunchtime which are also popular among their customers.
Despite the queue of people waiting, once the char siu emerges from the kitchen, orders are briskly filled. I'm not too sure if I got a raw deal but I felt the char siu wasn't as great as Meng Kee's version. Although it had the pre-requisites of great char siu with it's sweet, sticky and slightly burnt texture, it lacked the melt in the mouth sensation I look for. Thinking it could be a below par version I got with my single order of char siu rice, I even packed back a portion of "half fat and half meat" char siu but the verdict was the same. Not one to write off the char siu, I will be giving this place another chance soon and hopefully it does live up to it's reputation.

Although you said it's not as good as Meng Kee, still looks like a good plate of char siu which i don't mind having for lunch today.
ReplyDeleteLove the char siu here. We normally go there early on a Sunday morning and wait reverently for the procession of char sius to be brought out. At that stage, the char siu is still hot and definitely not hard. Love the fatty, charred bits!
ReplyDeleteUsed to live around that area. Quite a regular there but never thought much of it. More like a convenient place to lunch.
ReplyDeleteHave to say this again, wow u do go everywhere huh!
Hmm this was one of the best char siew i tasted. I like thier char siew as it burn with honey and can said a lot of part is overburn. but then that part is nice eventhough is not healthy.
ReplyDeletethat caramelized char siew is one good looking one. i can just imagine it melting in my mouth already!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great picture btw, boo :)
I prefer Meng Kee's too. only visited here once, and their char siew rice only served with tiny portion of char siew :-(
ReplyDeletetis place has one of the best charsiew in town. the outer layer is crispy n camaralised...the meat is tender... lovely...
ReplyDeletebtw... Overseas Restaurant actually has wonderful charsiew as well =P
woow, the char siew looks good. Yeah, Meng kee one was great..Wonder how they make it so good. Did this kedai kopi sell siew yoke as well?
ReplyDeleteprecious pea - quite a drive for you though. Think it's good for a weekend trip though.
ReplyDeletelemongrass - ah, I saw the procession of the tray with the char siu also. Reminded me of the siu yoke in Pudu.
tummythoz - lucky you to stay around the area last time. It's not so far with the highway network.
adrian - the sticky bits are yum though. Just that the meat part wasn't so great I thought.
the expedited writer - time to make some? It could be yummier than here since the pork is better quality?
jackson - refer to yr binis for char siu pls. Remember to go Crystal Jade in Beijing to eat the siu yoke. Very yum!
tekko - not bad more portion of char siu but not so soft the meat I felt. Maybe uncle had an off day.
chubbynerd - yes, Overseas char siu is yum. Featured it before in all it's sticky glory.
god of food - they do but not ready so kinda frustrating. It's their char siu they're famous for though.
i have tried this too and i thought it didn't live up to its fame either. thumbs up for the sticky, sweet sauce though.
ReplyDeleteI do want to but i can't seem to find pork in strips if you know what I mean. I'd have to go to a proper butcher for that and it's a looooong walk...lazzzyyy :P
