Whenever I'm around the Imbi area, I'll usually head towards Weng Hing or the Imbi market. As I wanted to try something new, I ended up at this corner coffeeshop I always pass by. The Imbi road system is kinda chaotic at the moment as it's now one way hence if you end up at the wrong side of the road, they divert you at the back streets instead.
At this super busy coffeeshop which occupies two shoplots, quite a number of people were eating toast bread with kaya. The display cabinet with the rows of thick loafs of old fashioned Bengali bread looked so inviting. I quite liked the crispy bread coupled with the not too sweet kaya. As usual, a slab of butter is a must for this type of breads.
Since there were so many stalls at this place, I decided to explore further and ordered a portion of Dry Hor Fun which was topped by poached chicken. I didn't think it was that great - the noodles weren't as smooth compared to other stalls while the poached chicken was quite bland. To get extra flavour, toss it well in the soy sauce mix it is served with.
For another visit, I decided to try their Pork Noodles. Originally I wanted to try char kuey teow but decided against it as the stall owner was away and it was the servant frying. The noodles were ok, nothing much to shout out or make a special trip down for. One thing I notice which is prevalent here is most stalls are manned instead by the Indonesian maids versus their owners. Kinda irritating since I would like to test out the stall owner's expertise. Also avaiable here is curry laksa, pan meen, wantan mee, seafood noodles, steamed pau and etc.

Welcome to Kuala Lumpur , Xcept now its becoming errrrrrrr quite Indon as you have noticed and felt with terribly mixed nostalgia
ReplyDelete( guess u better do a lot more of such KL Original Classics before its gone forever )!
...and we really mean that...
i thought the dry hor fun is this rest's specialty. Saw most patrons having that on my last visit.
ReplyDeletedid u know this kai si hor fun used to be one of the best in KL? both kai si and hor fun are very smooth and the accompanying sauce for the dry version is very tasty even it looked light in colour. sadly it gotten from bad to worse since 5-6 years ago. the boss at times don't even bothered to turn up during rush hours! stop coming here for a long long time.
ReplyDeleteJln Imbi is really chaotic now. Sounds like the only good thing here is the bread?
ReplyDeleteCan't remember if I've been to Mei Sin before. Funny how that hor fun looked so delicious in the picture. Looks are deceiving indeed. I think the roads are going to remain quite chaotic until Pavilion is complete.
ReplyDeletequite good wor when i had it recently..the drinks are quite good as well..but yes..the indonesian maids are the 1s serving the horfun..
ReplyDeletegawd, 3 post featuring down to earth grub which are kinda my favs!!! soo unbelievable. damn, i really hv no idea which to go first, jawa, wantan mee or this medan imbi place.
ReplyDeletebtw, is this medan imbi place around the mui hiong place which LL blogged about?
Yea the Dry Kai Si Hor Fun is pretty famous among KL residents. I used to have them once a week when my sister was having piano lessons nearby. Me and my friends simply love it. Different tastebuds I guess.

ReplyDeletecheck out this blog..i love this blog by Lily Ng who reside overseas..her recipe so easy to follow...
I love reading ur blog, gal...
Keep it up !
The bread loaf looks darn good. Burnt on top somemore. I like it like that. Hard to find those ... usually cut off the top of its to burnt or just rejects the loaf.
ReplyDeleteteam bsg - sigh, yes it's pretty evident in this place though esp the hor fun stall.
ReplyDeletexiu long bao - I guess std has dropped as not many people were eating it.
babekl - so sad, discovered it too late. Didn't see the owner of the stall at all, only 2 indon ladies manning it. Chicken and hor fun not smooth. The Lou Wong place in PJ was much better.
jackson - yup, the old fashioned type is always good.
jason - seems business has dropped for the Imbi area. Heard they were complaining abt it to the Chinese papers as now people don't need to drive past their shops anymore.
paprika - pavillion looks interesting but kinda forbidding like a block of concrete.
joe - I guess it didn't suit me as I prefer my chicken and hor fun to be smoother.
ktx - same row as Mui Hiong. Have fun eating!
tankiasu - could be the quality has dropped. Just that I had super smooth hor fun brought in from Ipoh last week at Lou Wong's PJ outlet which was much better.
teckiee - I think they also cut it as I saw them use the modern oven toaster vs the charcoal grill. Sigh! What to do, modern technology taking over.
Where to next in KL??? I think I want to go to 3U again too...
ReplyDeleteYeah, I supposed you're right. I walked past KTZ and Sakura the other day, it's like "hitting flies"!
ReplyDeletewmw - yes, 3U is good. Did Kam Fatt per yr suggestion. The uncle making the toast is quite funny.
ReplyDeletejason - yup, heard that it's easy to get a table in Weng Hing! Shock and horror since it's always super packed.
You are right, Mei Sin food now is not that great but you should try out the Lam Mee in Mei Sin. Taste as good. The rest is so so.
