PS Cafe @ Harding Road, Dempsey, Singapore

I've only got a short post about this place which we dined at last weekend. No abundance of pictures as I got barred from snapping any. I guess we shouldn't have sat so near the service counter as it was quite hard to hide two cameras including a DSLR.

My friends recommended this place which turned out to be a blessing in disguise since it was near to Holland Village. Basically it's the area between Tanglin Road and Holland Road. Depending on which way you enter, if from Holland Road, you will see a cluster of old houses which has now been converted into shops selling antiques and restaurants. Supposedly an old army base, it's a cute little village just off the hustle of the main road. If you come from Tanglin Road, it's just a turn off from Tanglin Park condominiums and you'll pass by lots of old houses.

The restaurant is housed within a converted 1950s bungalow which has been given an injection of life with glass walls. Overlooking a nice little forest of trees, it reminds one of an open and breezy Australian house. To see a picture of the place, click on the PS Cafe link below. We definitely need a place here in Kuala Lumpur as I can imagine how popular it will be as a place to just hang out.

Food is casual here - either order from the menu or the black board specials. There's two sittings: 6.30 and 8 pm. Bookings is always advisable as this place gets packed. I only managed to snap the fish and chips dish before I was told to stop. It was a good thing as it was kinda too dim. I only managed to taste my beef ragout which was served with spatzle and salad and Splashie Boy's smoked fish cakes. Both were really good especially the fish cakes. Also sampled a bit of the fish and chips which was really nice as the fish was flaky and fresh. For desserts, you can choose from a variety of steamed puddings, pies or cakes from the counter. We tried the pecan pie, apple pie and mango and banana crumble. All was good except I felt the mango and banana crumble was terribly sweet. Incidentally, service is extremely brisk here probably because they need us out for the next sitting. However, it wasn't super friendly though as I kinda hated getting lectured on how we needed to be out by a certain time.

  1. Hello! Just blogged about this place. They didn't ask me to stop taking photos. How odd. Converted bungalow is it? I was told it was new! But then the person who told me that was also slurring at the time! Hmmm. I liked the steamed lemon pudding. Yum yum!

  2. LOL! we were next to the kitchen hence they saw us taking pixs. I read somewhere it's converted? Looks it as it has old bricks at the side from the 1950s.

i don't think that is a fair comment...countary to that I find that service is better in Singapore these few years...beats having foreign workers whom don't even speak BM or English.

anyway I have always had a great experience at PS Cafe...with regards to the service I have no complains even when its been packed...the staff had gone out of their way to ensure a pleasant experience each and everytime I have been there. Also have never been stopped from taking photos, though it has never been of juz the food alone.

  6. This place is opposite the Botanic Gardens and close to the U.S Embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also its near to the homes of some of the wealthier people around at Ridley Park...

The Dempsey enclave was a former British Army Barracks, then the Central Manpower Base of Ministry of Defence and later the Youth Flying Club...

Just off Holland Road and outside the Orchard Road area, the Dempsey enclave is no longer only known for its antique, teak furniture shops and carpet dealers. Home to a handful of F&B nooks for a quiet and cosy night out, the area has made a name for itself as a wine-and-dine destination. Imagine wining and dining amidst lush gardens, secluded soft-lit surroundings and amongst breezy palms and you pretty much have the right idea.

  7. polarbear - that's good to hear that the service has improved as I remember a few years back, there was lots of complaints abt China Mainland staff in Fullerton Hotel who had problems communicating in English.

The service was efficient, just didn't like how they had to tell us so many times we had a deadline to get out by. Yeah, they didn't want us to take pixs of the food only but if you snapped people with the food it was okay. Is that a common thing in Singapore or is this just a one off?
