Ah Sang Bak Kut Teh @ Sungai Way, Petaling Jaya

I was curious about this bak kut teh place especially since I had read so many reviews about it from my fellow bloggers. One day, I decided to take the plunge and give it a try. It's relatively easy to locate since it's next to an Indian temple and a huge carpark.

Like all bak kut teh places, you can customise your bak kut teh with the various meats, vegetables, beancurd and in this case, enoki mushrooms. Based on your order, they will reheat the bak kut teh with your selection in a claypot. Served piping hot to you on a basket, let it cool down a bit before you take a sip of the broth.

Am not sure if it's individual preference or whether I had very high expectations about this place but I felt the meat broth just didn't have enough herbs in it. In fact, the taste was quite flat even though it was a deep dark brown. I did enjoy the meats and the best part was the enoki mushrooms. Thinking back about bak kut teh, I reckon every one has their preference as I know some like it more Chinese herbal tasting, some like it with a clear broth while others like it thick and almost pitch black. For me, colour does not matter so much but there must be a balance of a meaty broth with a tinge of herbal taste or else it just won't be bak kut teh for me. I definitely don't fall in the category of the clear bak kut teh soup type. What about all of you - which category of bak kut teh do you think you fall in?

  3. First time i see people put in choy sum (sawi) into bak kut teh. I never like veggie in my bkt as it tends to release some of its own flavour, kinda spoil the soup taste.

To me,i simply love the bak kut teh at PJ Old Town.

  4. precious pea - if I had to compare with the PJ Old Town one, that was so much better. This one just lacked much taste! I kept wondering if my tastebuds was wrong as everyone said it was super nice.

  5. I go for colour, herbal smell & porky soup. Don't like the dry version. Rather have 'tau-yue-bak' (pork belly in thick black soy sauce). The only greens I like in BKT is 'sang-choy'(lettuce). Extra enoki and crunchy 'yau-cha-kuai', please!

  7. i like mine heavy with chinese herbs, skewed towards bitter (fu kam). like precious pea, i dont like veg in my bkt (for the same reason as hers), but dont mind lots of mushrooms and yau zha guai! not bothered with the colour of the broth..

  8. boo... the blog post u linked to on my site wasn't about Ah Sang :) It's another BKT stall nearby.

I did try out Ah Sang about 2 weeks back... didn't take any pictures. Can't say they're bad but surely nowhere near great :)

BTW... my wifey doesn't think much of the BKT near Dynasty Hotel. I personally have not tried it but if u do go then go during the day. Night time is run by a different brother and apparently the daytime brother is better.

  9. I like mine with heaps of meat!! BKT with more mushrooms, fu chuks, lettuces than meat is definitely a no no for me. That's why I prefer eating those BKT served in clay bowls. No frills, cut-the-crap BKT! :P

  10. I'm rather boring, one of those "almost vegetarian" BKT lovers cos I don't really fancy the meat but like the broth to have a meaty+herby flavour. The broth is the best part, what!

Mushrooms and yau char gwai for me. And yam rice if they have it. I can just eat the rice plus broth, man... *yums*

  11. My BKT must have a strong herbal soup, lettuce, lots of meat and yau cha kuay. Unfortunately, I can only find BKT like that (strong herbal kind) in Klang.

  15. sc - wow, I have yet to reach the bitterness level. Where does one get this type?

wye jon - thxs for the info esp the tip on Dynasty Hotel.

tankiasu - then I think you will like this one as lots of meat and also served in claypot.

kenny mah - veg bkt? I know where. Wong Siong Wong in the Aman Suria area. They have just opened another branch in Glenmarie, Shah Alam.

lemongrass - yeah, I think Klang ones are still better.

fbb - hee hee, you are ancient but I better not say so much as that means I am also old too!

teckiee - is this the one facing the main road? i.e. the one which heads out to Taman Megah and the LDP?

unkaleong - oh oh, poor thing. Never mind. Come back to KL to see yr dahling and get lots of BKT! pssst, thais don't have their own version?

  16. oh dear..one of the shops in Klang, which I donno where. a local brought me there. else go to some ok BKT shops around your area when they're about to close for the day. the last bit in the pot is usually more bitter ;)

  17. They do..but as with all things Thai..It is rather sweet :(

  18. I was just kidding about the vege BKT. But they got ar! What would they think of next! But would the stock taste as good without the meat? Hmm... try then know, I guess...

  19. sc - thxs for the tip.

unkaleong - aiks! Sweet BKT sounds terrible. Don't tell me they add lime juice and chilies, i.e the holy trinity of Thai flavours.

kenny mah - I think it's vegetables in the BKT broth made from meat and etc. U ask WMW as she has tried it before.

  21. been wanting to comment on the Ah Sang BKT store cuz personally i don't like it.
I've been staying in Sg Way for all my life and when outsiders told me of this 'famous' BKT i don't know how to response. Basically the road 12 BKT herbal taste is light and i like it heavy. The BKT on the main street(Rd 1) is much better but getting a carpark is notoriously hard, so for many many years it is underperforming in popularity.

I found a new good BKT in Klang last week. Didn't see the name, it's a corner lot next to Parkson. Very clean, big portion, uses pot instead of naked fire for heating kettles, and best of all - the claypot is put on top of a burning wax(those found in catering)!
