Whenever I'm around Damansara Heights, it's a challenge to find something to eat at a budget price especially at night. Although I have the option to eat at the mamaks, KFC, McDonalds or Secret Recipe, I tend to prefer a quick burger at my favourite Ramly burger stall in front of Pusat Bandar Damansara. Recently I discovered another alternative - Otai Burger which is selling in front of Plaza Damansara's 7-Eleven .
A quick Google search led me to discover that Otai is a new breed of burger stalls that are the brainchild of Suhaimi Abas who started out in Chow Kit. Unlike any of the usual burger places, these stalls were franchises whereby each stall owner would have to undergo training to run the stall. Even university graduates jumped on the bandwagon and a few years ago, there were an estimated 130 stalls around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. I'm sure the number of stalls have grown as their target is 300 stalls by 2008.
Besides the training given to the stall owners, all their burgers are said to have quality control. For me, it's all about the taste of the burger.
My daging special (RM3) - beef patty wrapped in egg omelette taken in full glory. Compared to the Ramly burger stalls, they have a different way of cooking their beef patty. Instead of just cooking it on the hot plate here they use a metal scraper to cut through the patty a few times to cook the inside more. This makes it slightly more crispier versus the other burger places. I also like their buns which feel slightly more softer. Besides that, they have the usual condiments of shredded vegetables, mayonnaise and chili or tomato sauce.
Do give it a try and let me know what you think. I kinda like it and tend to switch between the Ramly Burger and this. Besides this stall, I've also seen another one at Taman Tun Dr Ismail - further down from Porto Romano and behind the Petronas station. There are also others in Kuala Lumpur so check their website on the locations.

hmmm...kinda long didnt read ur blog and it is still interesting to see u go makan outside.....must try the otai burger soon...by early april when i go to damansara then
ReplyDeleteGotta love our local burgers, huh? I normally get my Ramly Burger at a stall in Brickfields outside 7-11 near the YMCA. Haven't heard of Otai burger before. It does look really delicious though. And I'm saying this after just eating a BK Whopper. :-P
ReplyDeletefoodcrazee - awww! That is such a cute pix of Alpheus. Give us a call when you're down in KL, can always do a meet up.
ReplyDeletelemongrass - I never knew Otai existed but I guess now they are trying to conquer the suburbs with their blue and yellow stalls. I love BK too - Swiss Mushroom Cheese for me, pls.
There's an Otai burger near my place. We tried it, but not so nice lah. It was actually quite flat tasting.
ReplyDeleteSidetrack abit, some years back there was this burger stall in Section 9, Shah Alam. They had a killer burger. We still have not found another that matches its standard. Unfortunately for me (fortunately for them), the guys got married, and that was the end of their stall.
BTW, did u know what OTAI stands for....
ReplyDeleteI luaghed when I found out from my sister-in-law. It is for "old timer"!!! :)
Fulltime mom - I guess different stall different taste as this one was pretty good. Didn't know Otai stands for old timer, it had some fancy meaning on their website.
ReplyDeletenever tried Otai before, its all Ramlys around my area :(. during my college days, there's this burger stall at subang (ss15) that does the same method; slice in the middle of the patty to cook, and he'll add some pepper and maggi seasoning in the centre for that extra oommphh..hehe..what Otai did reminds me of that
ReplyDeletesc - I suspect one can categorise the different ways they cook burgers as these guys are so innovative plus there's so many burger stalls everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI like my Ramly burger with a slice of pineapple in it. Oh, m craving for 1 now. -_-"
ReplyDeletetummythoz - reminds me of my uni days as we'll always visit the greasy burger stand for burger with pineapple after the pub closes.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of Otai before cos i tot all burger stalls were dominated by Ramly's. Don't you think this kind of burger so much better than established fast food chain? OOo....my saliva dripping while looking at your burger.
ReplyDeleteI LOVEEEEEEE OTAI burger....esp the beef special. i agree with precious pea...i had a big mac in lumut the other day on the way back from pangkor, (no choice), and it was SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY BAD!!!!
ReplyDeletethe otai fler who served me was chirpily giving me a long commentary....
I had a triple pattie ramly burger along Jalan Alor once.. it was such the ultimate greasebomb. I must try Otai the next time I'm in KL. Do they sell their patties frozen in the supermarkets as well?
ReplyDeleteprecious pea - Yeah, I don't usually eat burgers except the Swiss Mushroom one in BK as I love mushrooms. Usually it's the fish fillet for me at McD's but somehow I love these burger joints!
ReplyDeletefbb - I'm glad you're a fan! One day must meet up here for a quick bite.
d - I don't think they sell at supermarkets! Wow, a triple sounds sinful. The most I have had when I'm very hungry was their double special.
When I go back for holiday, I will and must try to find Otai burger. My husband is a Ramly burger freak. But since Aussieland do not have such burger,he would only eat Hungry Jack (that is what we call Burger King here) whopper with cheese. But the truth, there is nothing better than our Malaysian roadside burger. Yummy.....
ReplyDeleteflower - do give us a call when you're back for holidays. Must meet up and take you around so you can indulge in all those things that Perth does not have.
ReplyDeleteSo coincidental - the shop happens to be nearby to where I work and I walk past this almost everyday but I wasn't aware that it's so 'famous' :P
ReplyDeleteblendedguy - I didn't know it was famous too until I googled it. Thought it was just a new burger place trying to grab some market share from Ramly's.
ReplyDeleteomg...i was on a ramly burger hunt just the other night and couldn't find any in bangsar. had to settle for a steaming hot cup of milo! now i know where to look!
ReplyDeletefor me, my all time favourite burger and hot dog stall has got to be jackson's hot dog! grew up eating it!
teoh - you know, I have pixs of jackson's burger somewhere. My friend grew up eating that too but strangely enough I didn't try any when I was schooling around there. Must revisit that place and blog abt it one day. Thxs for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteOtai sounds like otah burger, now that I've just tried my hands on otah. Hv seen ramly burger stall in Sg before, but not the otai burger.
ReplyDeleteThx for visiting my blog :D

oops...i forgot to signoff my comment as sooyin...*grin*
ReplyDeletei was at the honda service centre near the rothmans roundabout today...almost detoured to buy jackson's hot dog coz i couldn't stop thinking about it after commenting last nite! but i didn't have my camera with me, so maybe another time...=)
-sooyin-
where's this famous jackson burger lah, boo?
ReplyDeletejackson isnt our jackson is it?
ReplyDeletetigerfish - no problems! I love how you made yr own otak-otak. Something I doubt I will have the dedication to make.
ReplyDeletesooyin - ah ha, now I know. Jackson is yummy. Now am craving for one since did not have proper dinner tnite.
fulltime mom - he's in section 14, in front of a row of single storey terrace houses around one of the main roads.
fbb - nope, another jackson so don't worry as he's not moonlighting as a burger seller.
Slicing the patty into half is not a brainchild of OTAi though. In fact many other burger stalls around practices that. Anyway, would definetely check to see it out if it really lives to its name. OTai actually stands for Organisasi Tempat Ambil ilmu, meaning a place where you learn the tricks and not Old Timer! :) Happy burger-ing!
ReplyDeletehey there! i just want to give you a big thumbs up for the excellent information. keep posting!
