Recently, I did one of my walkabouts around Petaling Street and finally found my favourite sweet potato balls. It's been a while since I have eaten them as I usually visit Petaling Street either too early (to have porridge or go to the market) or too late in the afternoon or the evening.
A quick chat with the couple that run the stall indicates that they have been making these deep fried sweet potato balls for almost thirty years. No wonder I remember indulging in these when I was a kid since they're almost as old as I am. These sweet potato balls are made by steaming yellow sweet potatoes and mashing them when they're soft. They're then mixed with sugar and flour and rolled up into balls. See the first picture where the lady is rolling up the batch to be deep fried in the wok filled with hot oil. She fries them as and when her supply of deep fried sweet potato balls are dwindling to keep them fresh. The sweet potato balls are sold in packets of 10 pieces for RM2. A wooden skewer is given to you for you to eat your snack while you wander around the streets. Besides the sweet potato balls, she also sells the small crunchy popiah snacks and pineapple tarts.
Sweet Potato Ball Stall

If you're looking for these in S'pore, you can find them at the Maxwell Food Centre near Chinatown, with fillings such as green bean, peanut, coconut and turnip (salty)! :) Yummy!!
ReplyDeletecarcar - can find in Spore. See Shilpa's comment.
ReplyDeletean9ie - wow, the addition of ginger sounds good.
fulltime mom - it's slightly further down from the market. If u see Hong Leong Bank, walk down and it's on the same side but next to the Tang City Food Court place.
bayibhyap - it's the same stall as it's the only one there.
wmw - sounds like my childhood memories too.
austin powers - come come to Msia. Tis a good time to visit since it's Visit Malaysia this year. Thxs for the info on the Indian game.

shilpa - wow, thxs for the info, sounds like they got very innovative.
Would the sweetness be too sweet or it's just appropriate? But they just look so nice to be rejected. :D
ReplyDeleteHi boo_licious, they have been there for years, and I suppose they're still there. Haven't been back to S'pore for a year. :)
ReplyDeletegalaxie - it's not that sweet.
ReplyDeleteshilpa - rarely visit Spore nowadays though but will keep this in mind when we do.
Been to Petaling Street quite many times but never try this sweet potato balls. 3pm seem too early for me as I always go there for the asam laksa or Portuguese grill fish in the evening.
ReplyDeleteHave u try the KL Kepong Baru sweet potato stall? 30 years in business and there are 3 choices, i.e. sweet potato, yam and Tapioca.
ReplyDeleteOnly open on Sunday from 10am to 6pm.
