These past few days, my Streamyx has been driving me round the bend with it's intermittent service. Luckily it's back to normal hence I can leisurely write my blog entries. I've been reading quite a lot of BackStreetGlutton's blog recently and I thought I'll "borrow" his interesting concept of comparing these two places. It's also purely because a friend of mine told me of this place and since these two outlets are just near each other, it makes sense to do a comparison of the two.
These pork noodles are popularly known among the older folk as Sam Kang Cheong since they can be traced back to the original restaurant along Jalan Silang which is no longer in existence. Nowadays, you can get this version of pork noodles in various places since the original restaurant's family and workers had passed down the recipe to the next generation.
I was told that this small stall run by an old lady can be traced back to the original shop in Jalan Silang. Not many know of this stall hence her shop is pretty quiet and business seems to be better for the bak kut teh stall she shares the premises with. Instead, people tend to favour the noodles at Weng Hing, which is just round the corner.
I gave her noodles a try and felt her cooking was similar to home cooked food. Her minced meat topping felt like what my mother makes at home and didn't have as much black soy sauce compared to Weng Hing's.
In Weng Hing, the sausage is served in the soup versus this shop which serves it on top of the noodles. I suspect Weng Hing serves it in the soup because it helps soften their slightly drier sausage. When you bite into the sausage, it breaks in small pieces as the filling is dry. Totally unlike this shop whereby, the sausages are moist and tender.
Pricewise, this shop's noodles are priced at RM4 versus Weng Hing's at RM5 which throws in an extra pork ball. When you bite into Weng Hing's pork ball, you find it extra springy that one wonders if there has been too much artificial flavourings added. Their soup is also saltier versus this shop's one which is lightly flavoured with soy beans.
Personally, I prefer this shop's pork noodles which I find it to have less artifical flavourings and tastes more home made. The flavours are not as strong as Weng Hing's noodles but this taste is more to my liking. Note the first two pictures are from the Medan Imbi's stall while the other two are from Weng Hing's noodles stall.

ahhhh you've found my fave sam kang chong stall!!!! the siew cheung in this medan imbi stall is by far the tastier of the lot and btw, my sek sun colik told me this lady is the sifu of Weng Hing's sam kan chong stall owner!
ReplyDeletebabe - hmmm, no wonder her noodles taste nicer to me. It's strange though as not many people know abt her as the stall is quite empty.
ReplyDeleteOne of my all time favourites! There's another one at Mei Sin's coffeeshop in Imbi too. Actually, can't really go wrong ordering this, always nice no matter where - the difference probably is in the soup. BTW, was it you who asked me to let you know when Korea House in SS2 (the one at Teapot side) is in operation? I had lunch there today! It's run by the same operator of Korea House in Desa Sri Hartamas. The promotion right now is quite a deal, set lunch boxes at only RM9.90. Had the Beef bulgogi (they have chicken and pork too)with generous amount of appetisers , pretty good!
ReplyDeleteevery time I have my pork noodles at Wing Hing, I only managed to finish a small bowl, anything more than that will make me stop going there for months!
ReplyDeletewmw - thxs for the Korea Hse tip. Guess SS2 has gone Korean and fewer hawkers there now.
ReplyDeletebayibhyap - yeah the soup has a lot of MSG. Sam Kang Cheong is kinda tucked in the middle of nowhere - sad as her food is good.
tekko - go try Sam Kang Cheong instead, much nicer and homely.
Oh .. in Happy Garden also having "Sam Kang Cheong Pork Noodles" fall in love with the taste even it is a lot of MSG (it is Super) and i like it mix with "shang-hai" mee it is really taste, while you order larga it cost you RM3.50 small is RM3 ...
ReplyDeletebearyip - I think all these noodle shops add lots of MSG to make it tasty. Try this one at Medan Imbi, definitely a sure winner when you're down town.
ReplyDeleteI grew up eating the pork noodles at Weng Hing. And they definitely do not taste as "natural" as they used to. Like you said, artificial flavouring and such. Terrible. Must give Sam Kang Cheong a try when I feel like a hit of msg.
ReplyDeletepaprika - try sam kan cheong, flavours are less MSG induced here and more homey tasting.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for the 'honoured' mention/link.
ReplyDeleteMaybe u could consider next to get yourself, Foodheaven, da wheels and babe ( or who is who ?) to sit down, enjoy a selected meal(s) together( but make sure it is sponsored ok!, then only got REAL fun...and worthwhile..win win ok ) and then give individual 'verdicts' on the feast for the consumption of the readers !
This way a balanced flavourful opinion can be given at one go !
Yum yum, I agree!!

Nothing beats the pork noodle here. Been patronizing this stall more that 15 years. Noodle is good, pork balls are spungy, but of late i realised they put in more MSG. Got pretty thirsty after that. Anyway, i will still give them 9/10 since i've tried so many others and none actually come close.
ReplyDeletehi, just wondering if this shop is still around?
ReplyDeleteThat Sam kan cheong shop no longer exist isn't it? I went there 2 weeks ago and it is another restaurant now. Is it closed or they moved elsewhere???
