After reading Robyn's great post on the food from Chendering's night market, I started dreaming about Putu Pirings and Putu Bambus. I suddenly remembered I have a close up picture of the Putu Bambu I love from Kampung Baru hence I thought I'll share it with all of you.
I first discovered these when I did my Ramadan Bazaar series in Kampung Baru and ever since, I often sneak to Kampung Baru for my fix. You don't usually get Putu Bambu as Putu Piring is more common. If I am in Petaling Jaya, I usually get my Putu Piring in front of the smaller Giant supermarket in Kelana Jaya as there's a stall which sells them from teatime onwards. If it's Kuala Lumpur, then we usually go to the stall in Bangsar right in front of TMC.
There are many variants of the Putu which are all made from ground rice flour and steamed in different casings - there's the flat version i.e. the Putu Piring (Piring means plate in Malay) and the cylinder kind which is steamed in bamboo casings hence the name Putu Bambu. The Indian variety is called Putu Mayam or string hoppers where they mix it in a dough and press it through a sieve to make them into stringed nets which is then steamed. All these putus are served with gula melaka (palm sugar in Malay) and shredded fresh coconut as they don't have any taste if eaten alone.
If any of you have seen or eaten any other Putu variants, do drop me a comment as I'll love to hear about them.

Whoa....Putu Bambu.. something new to me! I've never eat this before but it looks so yummy! I wonder if it taste da same as Putu Piring?
ReplyDeleteUsed to buy Putu Bambu in Shah Alam night market. But I still prefer putu piring. Bought that from the hawker stall opp. TMC in Bangsar. The putu mayam, I prefer the one I bought infront of my old office in PJ Old Town. Sold by an old guy on the bicycle. The one in Subang Jaya, the putu mayam not as white and soft as the one in PJ.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... looks good...
ReplyDelete:)
Never tasted putu anything before though - is it sweet/ sour/ salty?
please yearn for this food....
ReplyDeletemeiyen - hiya! Sorry no Japanese ice cream yet but lots of snacks for you. Putu Bambu tastes exactly like Putu Piring except for it's shape.
ReplyDeleteflower - yeah, the one in TMC is pretty good. I wonder whether I can track down the old man - nowadays see a lot of them around with the metal box selling putu mayam.
J - it's sweet from the palm sugar/gula melaka inside and slightly saltish with the grated coconut.
foodcrazee - I thought you only have petai on your mind? Maybe wifey will be craving for this soon?
thats y i'm pleading.....lolz
ReplyDeletehahaha, that's quite funny. Guess the kid has a mind of it's own. Maybe durian is next. My mother ate a lot of durian when she was expecting me.
ReplyDeleteI love putu piring! When I was pregnant, I had a major craving for it, and it was sooo difficult to find!! I used to buy from a stall at PJ's Sect 17 pasar malam on Tuesdays, but have not gone there for a very long time, so I don't know if it's still there.
ReplyDeleteAnd not all are good either..I once tried one stall near my place at Rawang, it was so crappy (not enough coconut and sugar) that I threw it away! Will try your recommendations at Giant and TMC soon.
The putu mayam at Grand City Rest at Sect 11 is quite good as the coconut they use is fresh and moist (a lot of places reuse coconut that has been squeezed, hence dry and tasteless) and they use real gula melaka, not plain brown sugar.
Aiyo..it's now 1230 and I'm craving for putu piring!!! LOL
aiyo, been ages since i had one of these..mmmmmm fluffy and yummy. u got me thinking of putu bamboo now, i want some!! Boo, you are evil. :)
ReplyDeletekat - hmmm, I usually drive past the section 17 pasar malam so I'll check the stall. Try the TMC one, it's better than the one in Giant.
ReplyDeletehoney star - Hee Hee! Not too fattening versus fried snacks?
