Korean Food @ Haeun Khon Restaurant, Amcorp Mall

Last weekend, we finally tried out this Korean place which a few bloggers have reviewed recently. I say finally as I've known about this place for the longest time since Splashie Boy used to work in Amcorp Mall but surprisingly he never took me to eat at this place whenever I ate lunch with him. I think it was because he wanted something quick and this place gets pretty packed during lunchtime. I've seen this place move around the third floor throughout the years: they originally started out with one lot, then expanded to two lots which weren't next to each other then they managed to get two lots together and now it seems they are back to one lot. It's kinda strange they cut down on their space as they were packed on Saturday night.

The menu features mainly sets - Korean, Japanese and Chinese are available. Prices are reasonable and below RM20 for a set. I ordered the Beef Bulgogi set (RM13.90+) which came with beef slices, onions and oyster mushrooms. They also served me spring onion kimchi, spring onion pancake, a small piece of tofu with a sauce made from chillies and soya sauce, an egg drop soup, white rice and watermelon for fruits. Everything is served to you on a tray with the rice being stored in the traditional Korean metal round box and metal chopsticks. The bulgogi beef slices are nice and tender. I like the sauce they cooked it in which is slightly sweet from the sugar and honey they use.

Splashie Boy had their Pibim Pap (Vegetables Mixed with Rice in Korean) with beef slices (RM12+) that came with the same appetizers minus the spring onion pancake. Not sure why they omitted the pancake. This version came with a fried egg, sunny side up on top and they had sprinkled the red pepper paste on top of it. This irked Splashie Boy a bit as he likes to have the sauce seperate so he can adjust the spiciness of the dish himself. They had added shredded vegetables like bean sprouts, carrots, cucumber and cabbage for this version.

Although this place offers great value meals in terms of their sets and I must admit their selection is the best Korean budget food I tasted so far, bear in mind their Korean food has been adjusted to suit the Malaysian tastes. This is evident as that night, only Malaysians were frequenting this place. Genuine Korean food tastes slightly different and if that is want you are hankering for, head towards the Korean Villages in Ampang and Desa Sri Hartamas for a taste of it instead.

  1. have been their customer since the time before they moved to amcorp. prior to this, they were in a building in front of mandarin oriental.

yes their food is not authentic korean. kimchi jigge is nice but kinda watery compared to the real thing. nevertheless the fried squid and also the battered veg are nice. portions for the squid is miniscule though.

not as budget as they used to be... with the prices now, u can get a similar meal with more authentic korean cuisine and bigger portions at the korean village for slightly more

  2. lanatir - wow! U're an expert in Korean cuisine. My reference pt is my bf who has been to Korea before for work.

Can u suggest a reasonably priced place for authentic Korean foodin Hartamas? There's so many restaurants that I am often at a lost on what to eat. Non-BBQ stuff and with Pi Bim Bap as that's bf fav Korean dish.

  3. Hi boo! This is a non Korean food comment but just like to let u know I finally bought my Purple Artisan Kitchen Aid from Singapore. It's gorgeous! Kenwood is also a good brand but I just can't picture myself baking with Kenwood. All the best to your bargain hunting!

  4. audrey - wow! Lucky you. Sadly the Kenwood mixer we have doesn't want to die so it looks like my Kitchen Aid dreams are still going to be a dream.

  6. Used to be quite a regular to the Amcorp Mall's cineplex - less crowded + free seating, but never tried this restaurant. Salivating at the look & sound of the Beef Bulgogi!

  7. foodcrazee - eh, don't say things like that abt my mixer! I'm sure your wife will start yearning for lots of yummy food - ice cream and chillies at midnight?

tummythoz - wow! Didn't know the cineplex is so popular but I do like the secondhand bookshops there. Hope you will try it soon - pretty yummy and reasonably priced too.

my first choice is always ampang korean village bcos my korean friends always insists on eating there when they are here. having been to korea a few times, i must agree that the food is quite close to the homeland and i eat at kangsane very often (once every month or 2).

  11. lanatir - I saw the article on MM but Ampang very far for me. Don't have any in Desa Sri Hartamas which is nearer?

J - Yeah, it's easy for PJ people. There's also another Korean place in Section 14, Dae Jang Geum. Wonder if that's nice?

wyejon - I liked it too but it's not authentic. I suspect the real stuff is something not all Msians can take hence I wanted Lanatir's suggestion on a Korean place to try out.

  14. u can try DJG in section 14. i think it's a branch of the one in Ampang. i havent tried it myself but i heard good things about it. i know about the bunch of restaurants in DSH but havent tried any of them? prime reason is the fact that the shops in the korean village are so reminiscent of the ones i have been to in korea. the feel of it, the atmosphere, the loud conversations in korean - it all feels so much like korea... u'll probably be the only local customers in the smaller shops and they are your typical mom and pop shops in korea.

  15. more on this...

korean food is very communal... it's mean for sharing among family and friends... so sets are seldom seen in korea.

many have the misconception that korean cuisine is only bbq meats, bulgogi, ginseng chicken and bibimbap. it's much more. u can get silkworm (bundaegi) and seaslug (golbangee) at the village. as well as kalgooksoo (handmade noodles) among other things...

the pan chan (side dishes) are quite numerous (can get interesting things like marinated raw crabs and kimchi made from chili padi) and u can normally judge a place by the quality of their kimchi. the stews are normally quite 'kao' and thick.

  16. lanatir - There's also a Dae Jang Geum in Hartamas. May give that a try one day and wow! Thanks for the tips. All I have for reference is a Korean cookbook. I will definitely venture out to try something different. Now all I need to do is persuade my conservative bf!

  20. Must try going to Ampang one of these days for Korean food, but am not familiar with the place. I've been back to DJG in Sec 14 for the Bulgogi set. Their serving have shrunk and didn't taste as good as the first time. I went back again for the 3rd time to see if it was just their "day off" but it was the same.

  21. wmw - Awww, DJG is not nice. I may still go try the one in Hartamas to see if it's the same one. The only problem abt Korean places though are the smoke. Always pollutes my clothes that I'm not keen to eat there.

  23. can anyone told me this restaurant serve the halal food or not??

    ReplyDelete
  24. @atheenLoveTop: Went to this place in amcorp mall. The waiter says the food is halal but they serve alcohol. The food is malaysianised but ok la. expect to spend at least 20 bucks per meal after taxes. portions are ok for me, but then again, i am quite small sized and don't eat much. other places which serve halal korean food are in midvalley/gardens foodcourt. don't know about other places.
