Recently, Splashie Boy and I decided to splurge on Mexican food at Sandias which we read about in May's Klue Magazine. Coincidentally, the local paper i.e. the Star did a write up of them last Saturday. Although we get a lot of Tex-Mex food in American restaurants, it's the first time we were eating Mexican food and it didn't dissapoint.
We started off with their Taquitos Fritos (RM28) which was deep fried tortilla rolls filled with minced chicken. Eat them with the shredded lettuce, cheese, sour cream and the yummy salsa verde which is made from gooseberries. The salsa was not too spicy but just the right hint of sourness to make me keep eating it.
I had their Mole Con Pavo(RM39) - turkey served with mole made from cocoa beans (hence the dark brown colour) and about one hundred ingredients to bring the flavours out. It seems the one hundred ingredients consist of different types of dried chillies, banana, tomato, almond and plantains. Excellent stuff as the mole was yummy. I mopped up the sauce as much as I could with my rice and vegetables.
Splashie Boy had the Barbacoa de Cordero (RM38) which was leg of lamb that has been slowly cooked in a secret sauce and wrapped in plantain leaves. The lamb is really tender and full of spices. Eat it rolled up with corn tortillas and salsa.
We decided not to have any desserts as we were quite full. We also liked the set up of the restaurant as it was cosy but not cramped. The service was also friendly and we had a good time chatting with the owner. Incidentally for those who are curious like me, Sandias means "watermelon" in Spanish. The owners took inspiration from their favourite Mexican painting of watermelons which they have hanging in the restaurant.

OOOH, ya, i was there for their soft opening, and had those taquitos fritos, which were yummy. They also had these meat balls served in some yummy sauce. The proprietor was cecilia?? Been meaning to go back for a proper meal. Looks like you've just catapaulted me into making that date sooner.
fatboybakes - I love those taquitos esp the salsa. Yeah, we met Cecilia and she's really nice. Quick make a trip there! Now no excuse as baby is here already.
Never try Mexican Food before... this is quite expensive, but seems very delicious.
tulan - go try! Bring girlfriend for romantic dinner.
ooohh.. i heard so much about Mole Con Pavo (Anthony Bourdain's show), does it taste sweet because of the cocoa? I cannot imagine savory cocoa dishes. hehe.
Honey star - didn't know Bourdain had it in his telly show. It's not sweet but savoury. Give it a try one day.
Heard about the Mole in Planet Food Mexico with Tyler Florence (isn't he a hunk...and can cook too...). Finally, don't have to travel to Mexico for a taste!!
Is the chocolate taste pronounced? How does chocolate taste like savoury??
