Big question I am now contemplating - which stand mixer to get i.e. the ultra cool Kitchen Aid or the durable and reliable Kenwood?
We have an ancient Kenwood Chef stand mixer which has served us well but I think I blew the motor recently making a cake. Now I'm searching for a replacement stand mixer. My dream of course has been to buy the Kitchen Aid since it looks snazzy plus it's the preferred choice of chefs like Nigella Lawson.
What worries me is when I compare the specifications between the Kenwood Major and Kenwood Chef series, they seem to be more superior than the Kitchen Aid Artisan models since it's got higher motor speed and bigger bowl size. The Kenwood is also significantly cheaper since it's probably made within Asia while Kitchen Aid mixers are imported in from the USA.
Any thoughts on this? Let me know as I search for an answer.
Hey boo! I too was checking this out last week. Kitchen Aid has this new heavy duty series model K5SS, 5 ltr, 315 watts, 10 speed control, 6 level mixing, lift levels and hand lock with bigger beaters for RM2350. Only snag ... available in white only. I like the colors. Still contemplating....
ReplyDeleteI have a friend that use Kitchen Aid, in pink. She has no complains about it up till this moment.
ReplyDelete:)
Audrey - you too? What a coincidence. I saw the Artisan in the Justlife outlets in PJ. They're one of their dealers but did not see the K5SS. My sister's friend who has that does not recommend it hence I did not look for it at all. Something to do with it being the "lift" type vs the normal type of mixers we are used to.
ReplyDeletehanamaru - thanks for dropping by and yr recommendation.
Boo, checking with friends Chef. Will let you know once they answer me.
ReplyDeletei had my dream full filled!!! hahaha way before i knew who is nigella :p
ReplyDeletei've gotten my yellow kitchen aid about 5 years ago. my only complain is that i cant use it for a small volume recipe hahaha but i simple love it. i cant comment on kenwood since i've never used one before.
cant remember which model but its not the bowl-lift one cos i got direct from the distributor. dat time they only have 2 models for the non bowl-lift model.
happy researching ;-)
I wanted to get it, but I bought a cheaper one for this time. Maybe later I will get the ultimate dream machine of mine, - kitchenaid mixer. How much is it there in Malaysia. Here it is $659.00
ReplyDeleteI grew up with kenwood mixer - my mom had both the standmixer and handmixer. But I still remember fallign in love with kitchenaid the first time I saw it. And that was long before watching any celebrity chefs :P In Europe, youc an only get it in 12 colours and the model is slightly different from the states. I had wanted a hot pink one and my friend G tried to bring it (unsuccessfully) from the states for me. I love the red one I am having now and I still haven't stopped kissing it. I also use it to make pasta and for smaller quatity cakes and cookies I use my magimix.
ReplyDeletei use kenwood. couple of years ago, i bought an electrolux all in one with a lifetime guarantee. must say it's a bit costly but worth every cent. it has the milling function, mixer and the one i love most, dough kneading function. maybe u wanna check it out, too.
ReplyDeleteThey all stink, because they all have, to my knowledge, plastic gears. But the one Kenwood I bought didn't last a week.
ReplyDeleteMy advice is to buy the biggest model KitchenAid you can. I had one that had a 550 watt motor, I think. Took about 10 cups of flour at a time.
Saving $100 or so isn't worth it if you use your machine a lot and have to do things in two batches.
And if I had my druthers, I'd get it in stainless.
If I am not mistaken, the new kenwood ones all have stainless steel attachments. There are 2 heavy duty series in Kitchen Aid that I checked, the other is KP2670 (6 ltr - which is discontinued) whereas the one I mentioned earlier is 5 ltr. Both are lift types. So far, I am still desiring to have the artisan models either the red or the orange. With something this expensive an investment, I better not jump to conclusions. I shall be waiting for Mike's chef recommendation too...
ReplyDeletefoodcrazee - thxs!
ReplyDeletebabe - think yrs must be the KSM90 which has been discontinued. That's the one my sis has.
flower - it's RM2400 here. Really pricey becoz imported in from USA and they have to pay 45% tax on it.
valisa - u're just like me as I also grew up with a kenwood. My sis is thinking of carting one back from Italy.
shazalina - I never knew there's an electrolux one. I know Kenwood is now under Delonghi after a buy out of the company.
Bill - yeah, I learnt why Kenwood has higher motor speed, it's becoz of they use a belt driven motor vs Kitchen Aid's gear driven one. Hence higher motor wattage does not mean higher speed.
audrey - u're right abt the stainless steel attachements but only the high end ones use those. Yeah, wait for Mike's chef recommendation.
aiya, i JUST only saw this entry. you must be thinking why was i parroting your views about nigella in your later post. didnt know you had also referred to her and her partiality to kitchen aid.
ReplyDeleteit's ok fatboybakes - sometimes if I have lack of time, I also don't scroll down all the way.
ReplyDeleteI bake all the time, mostly cookies and cakes. I've had 7 mixers over the last 5 years. Most of them have gone kaput after a thick dough. Recently I acquired an OLD K5SS. I've had it for about three months now and have used my toughest doughs on it with no problem. It is the bowl-lift type. My previous mixers were the head-tilt ones. I don't really notice much as far as adding ingredients, but it is nicer in the fact I can leave it running while lowering the bowl, which helps remove dough from the hook, without it going everywhere.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know where sells Kitchenaid burr coffee bean grinders? tks!
ReplyDeletekitchen aid is one of my wish list. i even told my hubby earlier that he doesn't have to wonder what to buy for my b'day or anniversary present. Kitchen Aid is the answer. So, would love if u guys can tell me where I can find Kitchen Aid here in Selangor. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHey.. I'm shopping for a stand mixer now.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the one you bought eventually? K5SS is still being sold, and my hubs had a quote for RM2500.
I checked out the Kenwood ones as well but it seems nowadays they are all made in China or Malaysia (that's what the sales lady said), and we can't find a tag any where on the machine nor the box to tell us where it's made in. . :-|
They don't come cheap either.. all above RM2400.
Can you be so kind as to drop me a mail at zarasmama@gmail.com to tell me what you eventually got and how is the mixer and for how much did you pay for it?
Thanks a lot.
Hi Boo,
ReplyDeleteI was searching the net, trying to get some ideas on which mixer to get (Kitchen Aid vs Kenwood) and stumbled upon your site.So which one did you get finally?
I would really love to know. Any feedback thus far based on your experience?
Thanks in advance.
i looking sparepart for kitchen aid model 5k5ss ,where i can get this spare part in malaysia
ReplyDeleteI will vouch for kitchenaid. I have mine for 8years, after 2 relocation, it is still working like a breeze. I feel that the motor does not heat up as much as kenwood, thus it last longer. I am a fan of Asian Food Channel, if you notice all the featured chefs uses Kitchenaid.
ReplyDeleteIs there a distributor for kitchenaid mixers in Kuala Lumpur?
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm a Malaysian based in the US and can help you purchase a Kitchenaid stand mixer. Prices will vary, depending on what you want plus taxes and postage to msia. Email me at undercoverkitty at Gmail dot com for a quote, cheers!
