After hearing so much about the ginormous food court place in Subang Jaya called Asia Cafe, I finally managed to make it there. It's huge and so full of different stalls I had a very hard time choosing what to try. Eventually I decided to try these dumplings as I saw the Chinese couple making them. Although the menu and their picture shows it fried, I wanted mine with soup. It's a really good deal - I got 8 pieces for RM4 and they're huge. Extremely substantial enough for a meal and very delicious. I liked how my dumplings were just cooked right as I have eaten some overcooked ones before. They also give you a yummy chilli sauce made from dried chillies to go with it which was fantastic.
The couple were making their dumplings - very sweet as the husband was rolling out the dough while the wife was filling it up before sealing it with the traditional folds. She was working really fast so it was kinda difficult to get a nice picture.
Here are the rows and rows of Guo Tie or dumplings which are ready to be cooked. I reckon the couple is from China as they only spoke Mandarin hence I had a bit of trouble ordering my food since I can only speak Cantonese. Will definitely come back and try their noodles as I wonder if it's hand pulled plus I must bring someone who can speak Mandarin. Too bad they don't make jiaozi which I love to bits.
Any other recommendations for "makan" at Asia Cafe? Everything looks good that I was confused on what to try out. Just followed my instincts on this one and it turned out pretty good.

Hi, were the dumplings halal or non-halal?
ReplyDeleteSorry fulltime mom, these are non halal as these people are from China and not Xinjiang. I found some halal ones in Subang Jaya but they're dismal. I'll post them tmrw for all of you.
ReplyDeleteActually so far the best dumplings we had which were halal is Tian Shan in Berjaya Times Square. Try that as it's just as good as the original.
ReplyDeleteHi Boo! Glad you finally made it to Asia Cafe! There are heaps of good stuff to try...the Korean's pretty good though a bit ex. The Sarawak Kolo Mee was quite good too but I'm not sure if it's closed down...the stalls there have quite a high turnover rate! The grilled fish and the cheap RM18 crab with fried bread is also worth a try!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy :)
Boo: I love to ordered fried oyster mushroom and Guo Tie there..The couple has a heavy Beijing Slang..Even I had a hard time talking to them but their Guo Tie is real good..Asia Cafe is great for sight seeing too..:p
ReplyDeletetheir fried mushrooms! i can't remember which stall tho..
ReplyDeletewow, beijing dumpling, another new eating place for me. I been to Tian Shan once, it's kind of crap to me (sorry boo, i must not agree with you this time).. dumpling without pork just don't taste nice to me, same to halal dim sum..
ReplyDeletethanks for the tip! I will definitely check out Tian Shan. Being a Chinese Muslim, you pretty much have to do with medicore Chinese food here.
ReplyDeleteHeard a lot about Asia Cafe from friends too but never been there before. boo, should be hard for you to try out all the food there right? he he... let me help you then.
ReplyDeleteSue - thanks for the suggestion! The place is huge.
ReplyDeletekampungboycitygal - this is from the Guo Tie couple! Must try the fried oyster mushrooms since I love mushrooms.
swee - will search for it.
whistler - halal dim sum will of course always taste different but some do it quite well you don't even notice the lack of pork i.e. Eric's Deli is pork free.
fulltime mom - I won't post the pixs of the Muslim Chinese place we went as the food although cheap was extremely dissapointing - people will get swayed by the nice pixs I took even though the taste was bad. It was near the USJ 11 mosque.
tulan - hahaha, think we will need to split it up with more people as it's huge. Don't mind the more the merrier to try out the food.
Their thai food stall is excellent, the one behind the koi pond. Try their thai chicken laksa. Very pedas!
ReplyDeleteThe nasi lemak stall has great ayam rendang and of course their plain nasi lemak biasa is simply scrumptious. However the last time I was there I decided to try the the nasi lemak daging rendang and was disappointed as the beef gravy was slightly salty. Next time will stick to the regular nasi lemak ayam rendang!
They also have something at the grilled fish stall called Chicken Fish, a kind of snapper I think, not too sure about fish names as I'm carnivorous and usually eat meat. If you order one grilled fish you get the second one for free! The fish was good the the first time we ate there, but the second time we ordered the fish was bland.
And their juice stall is great. A huge 1.5 litre (?) juggernaut of juice for RM4.50. Try the watermelon juice!
Thxs for the tips - we revisited the place for lunch and had the fruit juice and pizza. Didn't try the laksa as it was already quite hot outside and no grilled fish since it was lunchtime. Will try to go during the night time to try out the grilled fish and fried mushrooms.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, so many good food!!
ReplyDeleteHow to get to this place? Its not hard to find rite?
honey star - asia cafe is next to Inti College, Taylors. Just head towards SS15 or Jalan Kemajuan in Subang Jaya. Very easy to find.
